The Book of Numbers 1

On the first day of the second month of the year after the Israelite people had left Egypt, Yahweh spoke to Moses in the sacred tent while in the desert wilderness around Sinai. Yahweh told him, 2“Count the men among the whole Israelite community by their tribal groups and ancestral families. List by name all of the men, one by one. 3More specifically, list the men who are at least 20 years old and can be soldiers. Count them with Aaron by their army divisions. 4One man from each tribe will help you and Aaron do this. These men will lead their ancestral families. 5Their names are: Shedeur’s son Elizur, who is from the tribe of Reuben, 6Zurishaddai’s son Shelumiel, who is from the tribe of Simeon, 7Amminadab’s son Nahshon, who is from the tribe of Judah, 8Zuar’s son Nethanel, who is from the tribe of Issachar, 9Helon’s son Eliab, who is from the tribe of Zebulun, 10Ammihud’s son Elishama, who is from the tribe of Joseph’s son Ephraim, Pedahzur’s son Gamaliel, who is from the tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh, 11Gideoni’s son Abidan, who is from the tribe of Benjamin, 12Ammishaddai’s son Ahiezer, who is from the tribe of Dan, 13Okran’s son Pagiel, who is from the tribe of Asher, 14Deuel’s son Eliasaph, who is from the tribe of Gad, 15and Enan’s son Ahira, who is from the tribe of Naphtali.” 16These men were those from the community whom Yahweh chose to lead their ancestral tribes. They led the Israelite tribal groups. 17Moses and Aaron summoned these men whom Yahweh had chosen by name. 18Moses and Aaron gathered the whole Israelite community on that same day. Then the men who were at least 20 years old registered themselves by name, one by one, according to their tribal groups, and their ancestral families. 19Moses did exactly what Yahweh ordered him to do. He counted these men in the desert wilderness around Sinai.

-21 20-21Moses and Aaron counted 46,500 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Reuben, who was Jacob’s oldest son. They listed the names of these men by their tribal groups and ancestral families, one by one. 22-23 22-23Moses and Aaron counted 59,300 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Simeon. They listed the names of these men by their tribal groups and ancestral families, one by one.

-25 24-25Moses and Aaron counted 45,650 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Gad. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-27 26-27Moses and Aaron counted 74,600 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Judah. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-29 28-29Moses and Aaron counted 54,400 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Issachar. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-31 30-31Moses and Aaron counted 57,400 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Zebulun. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-33 32-33Moses and Aaron counted 40,500 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Joseph’s son Ephraim. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-35 34-35Moses and Aaron counted 32,200 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Joseph’s son Manasseh. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-37 36-37Moses and Aaron counted 35,400 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Benjamin. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-39 38-39Moses and Aaron counted 62,700 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Dan. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-41 40-41Moses and Aaron counted 41,500 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Asher. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

-43 42-43And Moses and Aaron counted 53,400 men who were at least 20 years old, could be soldiers, and had descended from Naphtali. They listed their names by their tribal groups and ancestral families.

Moses and Aaron counted all these men. The 12 Israelite leaders, one from each ancestral family, helped them count the men. 45These men were all the Israelites whom Moses, Aaron, and the 12 leaders counted by their ancestral families. These were the men who were at least 20 years old and could be soldiers. 46They counted 603,550 men in total. 47However, they did not count the Levites by their ancestral tribe along with the other tribes.

This is because Yahweh told Moses, 49“Do not count those who descended from Levi. Do not list them along with the other Israelites. 50Moses, order the Levites to manage the sacred tent where the Ten Commandments are and every object in it. They alone must transport the sacred tent and every object in it. They alone must take care of it and pitch their tents around it. 51The Levites must disassemble the sacred tent when the Israelites journey to another location, and the Levites must reconstruct it when the Israelites stay in a location. If anyone who is not a Levite approaches the sacred tent, the Levites must execute that person. 52Israelites must set up their tents at their own campsites with their own tribal flags. They must set up their tents by their army divisions. 53The Levites will set up their tents around the sacred tent where the Ten Commandments are, so that Yahweh does not become angry with the Israelite community. The Levites surely must take care of the sacred tent where the Ten Commandments are.” 54So the Israelites did exactly everything that Yahweh had ordered Moses to tell them to do.
