Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. 1:17-46 The tabulation yields the same number of qualified men (603,550) as mentioned in Exod 38:26. Exodus 12:37 and Num 11:21 give an approximate number of 600,000. These numbers have been interpreted in different ways. They might reflect the literal size of this army (cp. Exod 1:9-10); alternatively, the figures might be symbolic, projected backward from a later period, or simply misunderstood in translation. See also study note on Exod 12:37.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
הַפְּקֻדִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ פָּקַ֨ד מֹשֶׁ֤ה וְאַהֲרֹן֙
the,enrolled which/who enrolled Mosheh and,Aaron
Since the same idea of “their counted ones” is repeated in the next phrase, the expression here is extra information that would be unnatural to express in some languages. If this is true of your language, you could remove the expression here. Alternate translation: “were the people whom Moses and Aaron had counted”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וּנְשִׂיאֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר אִ֑ישׁ
and,leaders Yisrael two ten (a)_man
Here Moses implies that these 12 men helped Moses and Aaron count the people, as stated in 1:5. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “with the 12 leaders of Israel helping them”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
אִישׁ־אֶחָ֥ד לְבֵית־אֲבֹתָ֖יו הָיֽוּ
(a)_man one(ms) from,house ancestral,his they_were
Here the phrase one man indicates that each of the 12 men represented his own tribe. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “each one of them was from the house of his fathers”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
לְבֵית־אֲבֹתָ֖יו
from,house ancestral,his
See how you translated the house of his fathers in 1:4.
