The Book of Numbers 2

2Then Yahweh told Moses and Aaron, 2“Israelites must set up their tents next to their own tribal flags and the emblems that represent their ancestral families. They must set up their tents at some distance around the sacred tent. 3Those Israelite tribes who set up their tents on the eastern side of the sacred tent must be together near the tribal flag of those who descended from Judah. They must set up their tents by their army divisions. Amminadab’s son Nahshon leads those who descended from Judah. 4The soldiers he leads are the 74, 600 men from his tribe whom you counted. 5The tribe that descended from Issachar must set up their tents next to the tents of the tribe that descended from Judah. Zuar’s son Nethanel leads the tribe that descended from Issachar. 6The soldiers he leads are the 54,400 men from his tribe whom you counted.

7The tribe that descended from Zebulun will also set up their tents beside the tribe that descended from Judah. Helon’s son Eliab leads those who descended from Zebulun. 8The soldiers he leads are the 57,400 men from his tribe whom you counted. 9You counted 186,400 men in total by their army divisions who descended from Judah and those tribes who set up their tents with them. These three tribes will start walking first whenever the Israelites travel to a new location.

10Those Israelite tribes who set up their tents on the south side of the sacred tent must be together near the tribal flag of those who descended from Reuben. They must set up their tents by their army divisions. Shedeur’s son Elizur leads those who descended from Reuben. 11The soldiers he leads are the 46,500 men from his tribe whom you counted. 12The tribe that descended from Simeon must set up their tents next to the tents of the tribe that descended from Reuben. Zurishaddai’s son Shelumiel leads the tribe that descended from Simeon. 13The soldiers he leads are the 59,300 men from his tribe whom you counted. 14The tribe that descended from Gad will also set up their tents beside the tribe that descended from Reuben. Reuel’s son Eliasaph leads those who descended from Gad. 15The soldiers he leads are the 45,650 men from his tribe whom you counted. 16You counted 151,450 men in total by their army divisions who descended from Reuben and those tribes who set up their tents with them. These three tribes will start walking second whenever the Israelites travel to a new location.

17Whenever the Israelites travel to a new location, the tribe that descended from Levi will carry the sacred tent and travel in the middle of the other tribes. The Israelites will travel in the exact same order in which they set up their tents, and everyone will travel in order by their tribal flags.

18Those Israelite tribes who set up their tents on the west side of the sacred tent must be together near the tribal flag of those who descended from Ephraim. They must set up their tents by their army divisions. Ammihud’s son Elishama leads those who descended from Ephraim. 19The soldiers he leads are the 40,500 men from his tribe whom you counted. 20The tribe that descended from Manasseh must set up their tents next to the tents of the tribe that descended from Ephraim. Pedahzur’s son Gamaliel leads the tribe that descended from Manasseh. 21The soldiers he leads are the 32,200 men from his tribe whom you counted. 22The tribe that descended from Benjamin will also set up their tents beside the tribe that descended from Ephraim. Gideoni’s son Abidan leads those who descended from Benjamin. 23The soldiers he leads are the 35,400 men from his tribe whom you counted. 24You counted 108,100 men in total by their army divisions who descended from Ephraim and those tribes who set up their tents with them. These three tribes will start walking third when the Israelites move to a new location. 25Those Israelite tribes who set up their tents on the north side of the sacred tent must be together near the tribal flag of those who descended from Dan. They must set up their tents by their army divisions. Ammishaddai’s son Ahiezer leads those who descended from Dan. 26The soldiers he leads are the 62,700 men from his tribe whom you counted. 27The tribe that descended from Asher must set up their tents next to the tents of the tribe that descended from Dan. Okran’s son Pagiel leads the tribe that descended from Asher. 28The soldiers he leads are the 41,500 men from his tribe whom you counted. 29The tribe that descended from Naphtali will also set up their tents beside the tribe that descended from Dan. Enan’s son Ahira leads those who descended from Naphtali. 30The soldiers he leads are the 53,400 men from his tribe whom you counted. 31You counted 157,600 men in total who descended from Dan and those tribes who set up their tents with them. These three tribes will start walking after all the other tribes when the Israelites move to a new location by their tribal flags.”

32These are the Israelites whom Moses and Aaron counted by their ancestral families. They counted 603, 550 men in total who set up their tents by their army divisions. 33However, they did not count the Levites along with the other Israelites. This is what Yahweh had ordered Moses to do. 34So the Israelites did exactly everything that Yahweh had ordered Moses to tell them to do. Everyone set up their tents by their own tribal flags and traveled by their tribal groups and ancestral families.
