The Book of Numbers 4

4Yahweh told Moses and Aaron, 2“Count the men who descended from Kohath from among those who descended from Levi. Count them by their tribal groups and ancestral families 3Count only those men who are between 30 and 50 years old, everyone who joins the group of people who work in the sacred tent. 4Those who descended from Kohath will manage the most sacred things in the sacred tent. 5When the Israelites move to a new location, Aaron and those who descended from him must go to the sacred tent and disassemble the curtain that covers the sacred tent. Then they must lay it over the sacred chest of the testimony. 6Then they must cover those things with fine leather, lay a completely blue covering over that leather, and then put its poles in the proper place to carry it. 7They must lay a blue covering over the table that is in my presence. Then they must place on that cloth the dishes, saucers, bowls, the jars they use for offering wine, and the sacred bread that they continually offer. 8Then they lay a red covering over those things, cover that covering with fine leather, and then put the table’s poles in the proper place to carry it. 9They must lay a blue covering over the lampstand that they use for making light in the sacred tent, its oil lamps, snuffers, trays, and all the jars containing olive oil that they use to supply oil to the lampstand. 10Then they must place the lampstand and all the items associated with it into a fine leather skin and hang all of it on the pole with which they will carry it. 11They must lay a blue covering over the golden altar, cover that covering with fine leather, and then put the altar’s poles in the proper place to carry it. 12They must place into a blue cloth all the utensils that they use to minister in the Holy Place, cover that with fine leather, and hang all of it on the pole with which they will carry it. 13They must take the ashes with burned animal fat from the bronze altar and lay a purple cloth over that altar. 14Then they must place on that cloth all the utensils that they use to minister at the bronze altar, including trays, meat forks, shovels, and bowls. Then they must cover all that with fine leather, and then put the altar’s poles in the proper place to carry it. 15When the Israelites move to a new location, Aaron and those who descended from him must finish covering the Holy Place and every item they use in it. Then those who descended from Kohath must carry all those things, but they must not touch any of the sacred items or they will die. Those are all the things associated with the sacred tent that those who descended from Kohath must carry. 16Aaron the priest’s son Eleazer is in charge of the olive oil that the priests burn to make light in the sacred tent, the spices that they mix to make incense, the grain offering that they continually offer, the oil that they use for anointing people, every part of the sacred tent, and everything in it, including the Holy Place and the items associated with it.”

17Yahweh told Moses and Aaron, 18“Do not let the tribal groups that descended from Kohath die out from among those who descended from Levi. 19Rather, in order for those who descended from Kohath to stay alive when they come close to the most sacred items, Aaron and those who descended from him must enter the Holy Place first and tell each of those who descended from Kohath what to do and what to carry. 20Those who descended from Kohath must not look at anything in the Holy Place, not even briefly, or they will die.”

21Yahweh told Moses, 22“Count the men who descended from Gershon as well by their ancestral families and tribal groups. 23Count all of those men who are between 30 and 50 years old. Those men will enter the sacred tent in order to minister and work there. 24This is what the tribal groups that descended from Gershon must do and what they must carry: 25They must carry the curtains of the sacred tent, including the tent itself, what covers it, the fine leather that covers over all those things, what covers the sacred tent’s entrance, 26the curtains that hang on the fence around the courtyard, the curtains at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounds the sacred tent and the altar, the braided cords, and all the utensils that they use to work in the tent. Those who descended from Gershon must do everything to take care of these items. 27Those who descended from Gershon must do all the work according to what Aaron and those who descended from him tell them to do, concerning everything that they must carry and everything that they must do. Assign them everything that they are responsible to carry. 28That is what the tribal groups who descended from Gershon must do in the sacred tent. Aaron the priest’s son Ithamar will lead them to do what they are responsible to do.

29Moses, count those who descended from Merari by their tribal groups and ancestral families. 30Count all of those men who are between 30 and 50 years old. Those men will join the group of people who do the work associated with the sacred tent. 31Concerning everything that they must do in the sacred tent, these men are responsible to carry the sacred tent’s wooden frame boards, poles, posts, and silver bases. 32They are also responsible to carry the posts, bases, bronze pins, and braided cords that were parts of the fence surrounding the courtyard, all their items, and everything that they used with these items. Assign each of them by name the items that they are responsible to carry. 33That is everything that the families who descended from Merari must do in the sacred tent. Aaron the priest’s son Ithamar will lead them.” 34Moses, Aaron, and the men who lead the Israelite community counted the males who descended from Kohath by their tribal groups and ancestral families. 35They counted all of those men who were between 30 and 50 years old. Those men would join the group of people who do the work associated with the sacred tent. 36Moses and Aaron counted 2,750 men by their tribal groups. 37Moses and Aaron counted these men from the tribal groups that descended from Kohath. Each one of these men works in the sacred tent. Moses and Aaron did what Yahweh had ordered them to do through Moses.

38Moses and Aaron also counted the men who descended from Gershon by their tribal groups and ancestral families. 39They counted all of those men who were between 30 and 50 years old. Those men would join the group of people who do the work associated with the sacred tent. 40Moses and Aaron counted 2,630 men by their tribal groups and ancestral families. 41Moses and Aaron counted these men from the tribal groups that descended from Gershon. Each one of these men works in the sacred tent. Moses and Aaron did what Yahweh ordered them to do. 42Moses and Aaron also counted men from the tribal groups that descended from Merari by their tribal groups and ancestral families. 43They counted all of those men who were between 30 and 50 years old. Those men would join the group of people who do the work associated with the sacred tent. 44Moses and Aaron counted 3,200 men by their tribal groups. 45Moses and Aaron counted these men from the tribal groups that descended from Merari. Moses and Aaron did what Yahweh ordered them to do through Moses. 46Moses, Aaron, and those who led the Israelites counted all those men who descended from Levi by their tribal groups and ancestral families. 47They counted all of those Levite men who were between 30 and 50 years old. Each one of these men ministers by working in the sacred tent and by carrying it and its items. 48They counted a total of 8,580 men. 49Moses, Aaron, and those who led the Israelites did what Yahweh had ordered them to do through Moses. They counted each male by what they must do in the sacred tent and what they must carry. These were all the men whom Yahweh had ordered Moses to count.
