11:26 The leaders question Yeshua’s authority
26 ◘ 27 They continued on into Yerushalem and on to the temple where they were met by the chief priests and the religious teachers and the elders. 28 They asked Yeshua, “Do you have any authority to do what you did? If so, who gave it to you?”
29 Yeshua answered, “Ok, I’ll also ask you something and when you answer me I’ll tell you about my authority to do that: 30 When Yohan preached and immersed people, did the authority for that come from heaven or from people here?”
31 They discussed this among themselves, reasoning, “If we say it was from heaven, he’ll ask us why we didn’t believe him. 32 But we can’t say that it was just from people.” (They said that because they were scared of the crowds, knowing that they believed that Yohan was a prophet.) 33 So they answered, “We don’t know.”
And Yeshua also responded, “Well then, I won’t tell you about my authority to do those things either.”
21:23 The source of Yeshua’s authority
23 When Yeshua went back into the temple and started teaching the people, the chief priests and the Jewish elders came and challenged him, “What authority do you have to do these things?”
24 “Well, I have one question for you first,” Yeshua answered. “If you answer it, then I’ll tell you all about my authority to do these things. 25 So, where did Yohan’s practice of immersion come from?”
They discussed this among themselves, saying, “If we say from heaven, he’ll ask us why we didn’t believe Yohan. 26 But if we say it was a human idea, then the crowd might revolt against us because they consider Yohan to be a prophet.” 27 So they answered, “We don’t know.”
“Well then, nor will I tell you about my authority to do these things,” Yeshua answered.
20:1 The leaders challenge Yeshua’s authority
20 One day when Yeshua was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the good message, the chief priests and religious teachers and the local elders came to him 2 and demanded, “Tell us what authority you have to do those things, and who gave it to you!”
3 “Well, I’ll also ask you all a question,” he responded. 4 “When Yohan immersed people, was he instructed from heaven or was it just some person’s idea?”
5 They discussed this among themselves, reasoning, “If we say ‘from heaven’, then he’ll ask us why we didn’t believe that God sent him. 6 But if we say ‘from people’, then all the people will kill us with rocks, because they believe that Yohan was a prophet.” 7 So they answered, “We don’t know where his teaching came from.”
8 “Well, then,” Yeshua told them, “nor will I tell you where I get the authority to do these things.”
