AICNT EPH chapter 4

4 Therefore, I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord,[fn] one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in [[us]][fn] all.

7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

8 Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, [[and]][fn] he gave gifts to men.”[fn] 9 But what does “he ascended” mean, if not that he also [[first]][fn] descended into the lower [parts][fn] of the earth? 10 The one who descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, in order to fill[fn] all things.

11 And it is this one who gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by every wind of teaching, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming, 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into him who is the head, Christ, 16 From whom the whole body, being joined together and being held together by every supporting ligament, according to the working[fn] in the measure of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

17 Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the [[rest of the]][fn] nations also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being {dead}[fn] in their thinking, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to the hardness of their hearts, 19 who, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard [about] him and were taught in him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 To put off, according to the former way of life, the old man,[fn] who is being corrupted according to the desires of deceit, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new person, created according to God in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

25 Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one with their neighbor, for we are members of one another.[fn]

26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,[fn] 27 nor give place to the devil.

28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, working for the good with his [own][fn] hands, so that he may have something to share with those in need.

29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit[fn] of God, by which you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor[fn] and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave {you}.[fn]

4:5, Lord: In reference to the Greek word for Lord, BDAG states, “The principal meaning relates to the possession of power or authority, in various senses... (1) one who is in charge by virtue of possession, owner, (2) one who is in a position of authority, lord, master... in some places it is not clear whether God or Christ is meant.” (BDAG, κύριος)
