ULT from whom the whole body, being joined and held together by every supporting ligament, according to the working in measure of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for building up itself in love.

UST He is the one who joins us all together and keeps us connected to each other. He teaches us how to support each other and to work in a coordinated way as he gives the ability that is appropriate to each one of us, just as a person’s head does that for the parts of his body. In this way, as we love each other, we will grow together and make each other stronger.

BSB From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part.

BLB from whom the whole body, being joined together and being held together by every ligament of its supply, according to the working in the measure of each individual part, the increase of the body makes for itself, to the building up of itself in love.

AICNT From whom the whole body, being joined together and being held together by every supporting ligament, according to the working[fn] in the measure of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

4:16, working: The Greek word energeia pertains to metaphysical working, operation, action (BDAG, ἐνέργεια).

OEB For from him the whole body, closely joined and knit together by the contact of every part with the source of its life, derives its power to grow, in proportion to the vigour of each individual part; and so is being built up in a spirit of love.

WEB from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

NET From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together through every supporting ligament. As each one does its part, the body grows in love.

LSV from whom the whole body, being fitly joined together and united, through the supply of every joint, according to the working in the measure of each single part, the increase of the body makes for the building up of itself in love.

FBV It's because of him that the whole body operates, every joint holding it together as each individual part does what it's supposed to, and the whole body grows, building itself up in love.

TCNT From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting joint, grows and builds itself up in love as each individual part does its work.

T4T He enables all those who belong to him to mature spiritually. A person’s body grows stronger, as each part of the body is joined to the others by the ligaments and as each part functions properly/works as it should►. Similarly, believers will become mature spiritually by loving each other and by each of them doing the work that God wants them to do [MET].

LEB from whom the whole body, joined together and held together by every supporting ligament, according to the working by measure of each single part, the growth of the body makes for the building up of itself in love.
¶

BBE Through whom all the body, being rightly formed and united together, by the full working of every part, is increased to the building up of itself in love.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:16 Each part of the body plays an important role and helps the other parts grow. Christ, the head of the body, works through the individual parts, makes them fit together, and is the ultimate source of growth (see Col 2:19).
• When all believers are ministering effectively, the whole body will be healthy and growing and full of love (cp. 1 Cor 8:1). Love is the most important factor in Christian growth (1 Cor 13:1-13).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα & τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ σώματος ποιεῖται

from whom all the body & the growth ˱of˲_the body /is/_making

Paul continues the metaphor of the believers as a human body with Christ as the head to describe how Christ causes believers to work together in harmony as the head of a body causes the body parts to work together to grow in a healthy way. See the UST.

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

εἰς οἰκοδομὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ

to /the/_building ˱of˲_itself in love

The word for indicates a purpose clause. The purpose of all of the believers working together in harmony, as the members of a human body do, is so that all believers will grow in our ability to love each other and to love God. Use a word in your language that marks this as a purpose clause.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν ἀγάπῃ

in in love

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word love, you could express the same idea with a verbal form. Alternate translation: “as the members love one another” or “to be able to love each other more”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

διὰ πάσης ἁφῆς τῆς ἐπιχορηγίας

by every joint ˱of˲_its supply

Paul continues the metaphor comparing the believers to a human body. A ligament is a strong band that connects bones or holds organs in place in the body. Just as the body is held together by strong ligaments, so the believers are held together by love that grows stronger as the body parts grow and work together. See the UST.
