TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:20-24 What you learned about Christ is the truth that comes from him. He gives true understanding (cp. John 14:6) and calls his people to an entirely new way of life (cp. Rom 6:3-14; 13:12-14; Col 3:8-10).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / irony

εἴ γε αὐτὸν ἠκούσατε καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε

if surely him ˱you_all˲_heard and in him ˱you_all˲_/were/_taught

Paul knows that the people to whom he is writing have heard and been taught these things. He is using irony as a form of rebuke—if they are doing things contrary to the way of Christ, they know better than that and need to stop. See the UST.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε

in him ˱you_all˲_/were/_taught

If your language does not use this passive form, you can state this in active form. This could mean: (1) they received instruction in his ways. (2) Jesus’ people have taught them.

καθώς ἐστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ

as is /the/_truth in ¬the Jesus

See the UST. Alternate translation: “as Jesus teaches us the true way to live” or “as everything about Jesus is true”
