1 Corinthians 14

14Pursue love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

2For the one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God; for no one understands, but in the Spirit one speaks mysteries. 3But the one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and encouragement and consolation.

4The one speaking in a tongue builds up oneself; but the one prophesying builds up the assembly.

5I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy; for the one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless they interpret, so that the church may receive edification.

6Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophecy or by teaching? 7Likewise, lifeless things that produce sound, whether flute or harp, if they do not give distinction to the notes, how will what is played on the flute or the harp be recognized? 8For if the trumpet gives an indistinct sound, who will prepare for battle?

9So also you, through the tongue, if you do not give a clear word, how will what is spoken be known? For you will be speaking into the air. 10There are, perhaps, many [kinds of][fn] languages in the world, and none [[of them]][fn] is without meaning. 11Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker will be a foreigner to me.

12In this way also you, since you are zealous for spirits,[fn] seek for the building up of the church so that you may abound.

13Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret.

14[For][fn] If I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15What then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding; I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

16For if you bless in the spirit, how will the one filling the place of the unlearned say the Amen upon your thanksgiving? Since what you say, they do not know. 17For you indeed give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.

18I thank [[my]][fn] God, more than all of you, [that I speak][fn] in tongues. 19[But][fn] In the church, I would rather speak five words {with}[fn] my mind, so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand [words][fn] in a tongue.

20Brothers, do not be children in your thinking; be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.

21In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of others will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”[fn] 22Therefore, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers.

23If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders [or unbelievers][fn] enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or uninformed person enters, they are convicted by all, they are examined by all, 25[[And thus]][fn] the secrets of their heart become evident, and thus falling on their face, they will worship God, declaring that [[indeed]][fn] God is among you.

26What then, brothers? When you come together, each one [[of you]][fn] has a hymn, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, an interpretation; let all things be done for building up.

27If anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be by two or at most three, and each in turn, and let one interpret; 28but if there is no interpreter, let the speaker be silent in the assembly, and let them speak to themselves and to God.

29Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others discern; 30[but][fn] if a revelation is made to another who is seated, let the first be silent. 31For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32And the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets, 33for God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

34[Let {the}[fn] women be silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them be subject [[to the men]],[fn] as the law also says. 35If they desire [to learn][fn] anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the assembly.][fn] 36Or did the word of God originate from you? Or did it reach only you?

37If anyone thinks they are a prophet or spiritual, let them recognize that what I am writing to you is a command of [the Lord];[fn] 38but if anyone is ignorant, let them be ignorant.

39So then, brothers [of mine],[fn] strive to prophesy and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40[But][fn] Let all things be done decently and in order.
