OET (OET-LV) Be_pursuing the love, and be_being_zealous the for_spiritual matters, but more that you_all_may_be_prophesying.
OET (OET-RV) Aim to show love, and eagerly strive for spiritual things—especially the ability to prophesy,
In this section Paul instructed the Corinthian believers about how they should worship God together. First, he compared prophecy and tongues. He stressed the value of prophecy for building up the church. Then he said they should conduct their worship services in an orderly and harmonious way. They were not to speak all at once. People who spoke in tongues should have someone to interpret, and women were to remain silent in the assembly.
Here are some other possible section headings:
Good order in worship
The spiritual gifts of prophecy and tongues
Use spiritual gifts to help the church grow
In this paragraph Paul resumed his discussion about spiritual gifts that he began in 12:31. He compared the gift of speaking in tongues and the gift of prophecy. He said that the gift of prophecy is more useful to the church.
Earnestly pursue love
¶ Follow after love,
¶ Make your(plur) goal be to love other people,
Earnestly pursue love: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as Earnestly pursue love is a command in the plural.
Here are some other ways to translate this command:
Make love your aim (RSV, NJB)
It is love…that you should strive for (GNT)
You should seek after love (NCV)
In some languages love must be a verb rather than a noun. Here are some other ways to translate this:
Love(plur) other people
Seek to have a heart which loves other people
and eagerly desire spiritual gifts,
and be eager to have the spiritual gifts,
and try hard to have the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives.
and: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as and is often translated as “but.” There are two ways to interpret this word:
It indicates continuity. The Corinthians should pursue love and they should also desire the spiritual gifts. For example:
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts (GW) (BSB, GW, NIV, RSV, ESV, NET, NCV, KJV)
It indicates contrast. For example:
Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts (NJB) (NJB, NLT, NASB)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is followed by the majority of English versions.See also Fee, p. 235. Paul said in the first part of chapter 13 that the Corinthians should have both love and the spiritual gifts.
eagerly desire: The phrase eagerly desire is a command in the plural. Paul wanted the believers to strongly desire to have the gifts that the Spirit gives.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
desire(plur) very much
strongly want
try hard to have
In some languages there may be an idiom with this meaning. Idioms in some languages are:
set your heart/liver/stomach on having
focus on having
spiritual gifts: These words were used in 1 Corinthians 12:1a, and you should translate them the same way here.
especially the gift of prophecy.
especially the gift of prophesying.
The gift you should desire the most is the gift of declaring God’s word to people.
especially the gift of prophecy: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as especially the gift of prophecy is more literally “especially that you may prophesy.” The BSB has supplied the word gift to make it clear that Paul talked about one of the spiritual gifts mentioned in 14:1b. Here, prophecy refers to the ability to declare God’s word to people. This word was used in 1 Corinthians 11:4a and 12:10b and you should translate it the same way here.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
especially desire(plur) to prophesy
the gift you should want especially strongly is the gift of prophecy
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
διώκετε
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διώκετε τήν ἀγάπην ζηλοῦτε δέ τά πνευματικά μᾶλλον δέ ἵνα προφητεύητε)
Here Paul speaks as if he wants the Corinthians to run after and try to capture love. He speaks in this way because he wants them to act in love as persistently as someone who “pursues” someone or something. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [Consistently act in] or [Seek after]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
τὴν ἀγάπην
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διώκετε τήν ἀγάπην ζηλοῦτε δέ τά πνευματικά μᾶλλον δέ ἵνα προφητεύητε)
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind love, you can express the idea by using a verb such as “love.” Paul implies that the object of love is other people. Alternate translation: [loving others]
Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases
ζηλοῦτε δὲ
˓be˒_being_zealous (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Διώκετε τήν ἀγάπην ζηλοῦτε δέ τά πνευματικά μᾶλλον δέ ἵνα προφητεύητε)
Here, but introduces the next topic that Paul wishes to speak about. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express but and think that Paul is contrasting Pursue love and be zealous for spiritual gifts with another word that introduces a new topic, or you could start a new sentence here. If you use the second alternate translation, you may need to add a period before it. Alternate translation: [and be zealous for] or [Be zealous for]
Note 4 topic: translate-unknown
ζηλοῦτε
˓be˒_being_zealous
Here, to be zealous for something means that one vigorously seeks after it or strongly desires it. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express be zealous for with a comparable expression. Alternate translation: [set your heart on] or [seek after]
μᾶλλον
more
Here, especially could mean: (1) that prophecy is the best gift to be zealous for. Alternate translation: [above all] (2) that prophecy is better than spiritual gifts. Alternate translation: [more than that,]
14:1 Of all the special abilities the Spirit gives (see study note on 12:1–14:40), Paul encourages the Corinthians to seek the ability to prophesy (see 12:10) because of its greater benefit to the church.
OET (OET-LV) Be_pursuing the love, and be_being_zealous the for_spiritual matters, but more that you_all_may_be_prophesying.
OET (OET-RV) Aim to show love, and eagerly strive for spiritual things—especially the ability to prophesy,
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
