Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not necessarily natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

OET (OET-RV) But most importantly, brothers and sisters, don’t swear by heaven or earth or by any other kind of oath but simply be honest so that ‘yes’ means yes and ‘no’ means no, then you won’t end up getting judged.![]()
OET-LV Before but, all things, brothers of_me, not be_swearing, neither the by_heaven, nor the earth, nor other any oath, but let_be of_you_all your Yes be, yes, and your No be, no, in_order_that not under judgement you_all_may_fall.![]()
ULT But before all, my brothers, do not swear, neither, by the heaven nor, by the earth, nor, by any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes” and your “No,” “No,” so that you may not fall under judgment.
UST Now this, my fellow believers, is something very important for you to realize. You must never take an oath by calling on heaven or the earth or anything else to guarantee a promise that you make. All you need to say is “Yes” or “No.” God will judge you if you go beyond that and make an oath but then do not keep your promise.
BSB Above all, my brothers, {do} not swear, not [by] heaven [or] earth [or by] any other oath. Simply {let} your “Yes” be yes, and [your] “No,” no, so that you will not fall under judgment.
MSB Above all, my brothers, {do} not swear, not [by] heaven [or] earth [or by] any other oath. Simply {let} your “Yes” be yes, and [your] “No,” no, so that you will not fall into hypocrisy.[fn]
BLB But before all things, my brothers, do not swear, neither by heaven, nor the earth, nor any other oath. But let your "Yes" be yes, and the "No," no, so that you might not fall under judgment.
AICNT Above all, my brothers, do not swear, neither by heaven nor by earth nor by any other oath: But let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
OEB Above all things, my friends, never take an oath, either by heaven, or by earth, or by anything else. Let your “Yes” suffice for yes, and “No” for no, so that you may escape condemnation.
WEBBE & WMBB But above all things, my brothers, don’t swear—not by heaven, or by the earth, or by any other oath; but let your “yes” be “yes”, and your “no”, “no”, so that you don’t fall into hypocrisy.[fn]
NET And above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath. But let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no, so that you may not fall into judgment.
LSV And before all things, my brothers, do not swear, neither by Heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath, but let your “Yes” be yes, and the “No,” no, that you may not fall under judgment.
FBV Above all, my friends, don't swear. Not by heaven, not by earth, and not by any other kind of oath. Just let your yes be yes, and your no be no, so you won't fall under condemnation.
TCNT Above all, my brothers, do not swear, neither by heaven, nor by earth, nor by any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes” and your “No” be “No,” so that you will not fall [fn]into hypocrisy.
T4T Also, my fellow believers, I want to say something important about how you talk. If you say that you will do something, do not say, “If I do not do it, may God in heaven [MTY] punish me.” Do not even say, “If I do not do it, may someone here on earth [MTY] punish me.” Do not say anything like that. Instead, if you say “Yes,” then do what you said that you would do. If you say “No,” then do not do it. Otherwise, God will condemn you.
LEB Now above all, my brothers, do not swear either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no, in order that you may not fall under judgment.
BBE But most of all, my brothers, do not take oaths, not by the heaven, or by the earth, or by any other thing: but let your Yes be Yes, and your No be No: so that you may not be judged.
Moff Above all, my brothers, never swear an oath, either by heaven or by earth or by anything else; let your "yes" be a plain "yes," your "no" a plain "no," lest you incur judgment.
Wymth But above all things, my brethren, do not swear, either by Heaven or by the earth, or with any other oath. Let your `yes' be simply `yes,' and your `no' be simply `no;' that you may not come under condemnation.
ASV But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by the heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath: but let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay; that ye fall not under judgment.
