ULT ISA Chapter 1

ISA 1 ©

1The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

2Hear, heavens, and give ear, earth,

for Yahweh has spoken:

“Sons I have raised and brought up,

but they have rebelled against me.

3The ox knows his owner,

and the donkey the feeding trough of his master,

but Israel does not know;

my people does not understand.”

4Woe, sinful nation,

people heavy of iniquity,

seed of evildoers,

sons who act corruptly!

They have abandoned Yahweh,

they have despised the Holy One of Israel,

they have estranged themselves from him.

5Why should you still be beaten,

should you continue in rebellion?

The whole head is sick,

and the whole heart weak.

6From the sole of the foot and to the head

there is no health in it;

bruises and sores and fresh wounds;

they have not been pressed out,

and they have not been bandaged,

and they have not been softened with oil.

7Your land is a desolation,

your cities burned with fire;

your field—in front of you

strangers are devouring it—

and it is a desolation as the overthrowing of strangers.

8And the Daughter of Zion is left

like a hut in a vineyard,

like a shed in a cucumber field,

like a besieged city.

9Had not Yahweh of hosts

left for us a few survivors,

we would have been like Sodom,

we would have been like Gomorrah.

10Hear the word of Yahweh, rulers of Sodom;

give ear to the law of our God, people of Gomorrah:

11“What is the multitude of your sacrifices to me?”

says Yahweh.

“I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams,

and the fat of fatted beasts,

and in the blood of bulls or lambs or goats

I do not delight.

12When you come to appear before my face,

who has required this from your hand,

to trample my courts?

13Do not continue to bring an offering of worthlessness;!

It is incense of abomination to me.

New moon and Sabbath, calling of assemblies—

I am not able to bear iniquity and festive assembly.

14Your new moons and your appointed feasts

my spirit hates;

they have become a burden to me.

I am weary of carrying.

15So when you spread out your hands,

I hide my eyes from you;

even though you multiply prayer,

I do not listen;

your hands are full of blood.

16Wash, cleanse yourselves;

remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;

stop doing evil;

17learn to do good;

seek justice;

correct the oppressor;

carry out justice for the fatherless;

contend for the widow.”

18“Come, now, and let us come to terms,”

says Yahweh.

“Though your sins are like scarlet,

they will be white like snow;

though they are red like crimson,

they will be like wool.

19If you agree and obey,

you will eat the good of the land,

20but if you refuse and rebel,

by the sword you will be eaten,”

for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.

21How the faithful city

has become a prostitute!

She who was full of justice—

righteousness lodged in her,

but now, murderers.

22Your silver has become dross,

your wine mixed with water.

23Your princes are rebels

and companions of thieves;

everyone loves bribes

and pursues payoffs.

They do not defend the fatherless,

and the cause of the widow does not come to them.

24Thus is the declaration of the Lord Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel:

“Woe! I shall gratify myself before my adversaries,

and avenge myself before my enemies;

25and turn my hand against you,

and refine your dross as with lye,

and take away all your impurity.

26And I shall restore your judges as at the first,

and your counselors as at the beginning;

afterwards you will be called The City of Righteousness,

a faithful town.”

27Zion will be redeemed by justice,

and her repentant ones by righteousness,

28but rebels and sinners will be crushed together,

and those who abandon Yahweh will come to an end,

29For they will be ashamed of the sacred oak trees

which you desired,

and you will be embarrassed by the gardens that you have chosen.

30For you will be like an oak

whose leaf fades,

and like a garden that has no water.

31And the strong man will be like tinder,

and his work like a spark,

and both of them will burn together,

and none will quench them.
