TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:18 God called his people to come and settle their dispute so that he could restore his covenant relationship with them. This required Judah to make a decision between obeying or turning away (1:19-20). Isaiah says their sins are like scarlet . . . they are red like crimson, the color of blood, which Judah had unjustly shed (1:15).
• white as snow . . . white as wool: The people would be radically transformed—cleansed, purified, and made holy (see also Ps 51:7; Dan 7:9).

(Occurrence 0) Come now, and let

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

Yahweh graciously and lovingly invites the people to listen to what he is about to say. “Please listen to me. Let” or “Pay attention; I want to help you. Let”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

(Occurrence 0) let us reason together

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

“let us think about this together” or “we need to discuss this” or “what are we going to do?” Yahweh invites the people to discuss the future. Here the word “us” refers to Yahweh and includes the people of Judah.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white like snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

Isaiah is speaking of the people as if they were wearing clothes that were supposed to be white wool and of their sins as if they were red stains on the clothes. If Yahweh forgives their sins, it will be as if their clothes become white again.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) like scarlet

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

Scarlet is a bright red color. Alternate translation: “bright red”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) white like snow

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

White is often a symbol for holiness or purity. “Snow” refers to something like frozen rain that is very white. Since this simply describes something as very white, you could replace it with something else that is white: “white as a seashell” or “white as a dove.” This means that their sins will be forgiven.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) red like crimson

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

Crimson is a dark red color. Alternate translation: “dark red”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) like wool

(Some words not found in UHB: come now and, reason says YHWH if are sins,your_all's like_the,scarlet as_~_as_the,snow white if red like_the,crimson like_the,wool be )

Wool is the hair of a sheep or goat. How they will be like wool can be made explicit. Alternate translation: “white like wool” (See also: figs-simile)
