ULTBut you, brothers, are not in darkness, so that the day might overtake you as a thief.

USTHowever, our fellow believers in the Messiah, you are not people who are unaware of what will happen, like when people are in the darkness. This is why, when the Lord Jesus returns to earth to punish the people who do not belong to him, he will not surprise you as if he were a thief.

BSBBut you, brothers, are not in [the] darkness so that [this] day should overtake you like a thief.

MSBBut you, brothers, are not in [the] darkness so that [this] day should overtake you like a thief.[fn]

WEBBE & WMBBBut you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.

MSG(4-8)But friends, you’re not in the dark, so how could you be taken off guard by any of this? You’re sons of Light, daughters of Day. We live under wide open skies and know where we stand. So let’s not sleepwalk through life like those others. Let’s keep our eyes open and be smart. People sleep at night and get drunk at night. But not us! Since we’re creatures of Day, let’s act like it. Walk out into the daylight sober, dressed up in faith, love, and the hope of salvation.

NETBut you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would.

LSVbut you, brothers, are not in darkness, that the Day may catch you as a thief;

TCNTBut you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should catch you like [fn]a thief.

T4T4-5Just like people in the dark are unaware of what is happening around them, most people will not be aware of what is about to happen to them [MET, PRS]. Just like a thief comes unexpectedly for people who are unaware, that time of punishment will come when people are not expecting it [SIM]. But you, my fellow believers, are people who are very much aware [LIT] of what is going to happen. As a result, you will be expecting [LIT] those things [MTY] to happen [PRS]. All of us believers are people [IDM] who do what is right, as people usually do in the daytime [MET] when their actions can be seen. We are not people who do evil things, as some people do when it is dark [MET].

LEBBut you, brothers, are not in the darkness, so that the day should catch you like a thief,
