Readers’ Version

Literal Version

2So I made the decision myself not to make a sad visit to you, 2because if I’m making you all upset, who would be left to cheer me up except for the people that I would’ve just upset? 3So I wrote this same thing, so that when I came, I wouldn’t get your upsets when I should be being happy, having trusted in you all that my happiness is in you. 4I wrote to you much difficulty and anguish in my heart and through many tears, not wanted to make you all upset, but rather so that you’d know how much love toward you all is much greater than all that.

2I_judged for by_myself this, which not again in sorrow to you_all to_come.
2For/Because if I am_sorrowing you_all, also who is which gladdening me, except not/lest the one being_sorrowed by me?
3And I_wrote this same thing, in_order_that not having_come, sorrow I_may_have from of_whom it_was_fitting me to_be_rejoicing, having_trusted in all you_all that the my joy of_all of_you is.
4For/Because out_of much tribulation and anguish of_heart, I_wrote to_you_all through many tears, not in_order_that you_all_may_be_sorrowed, but the love in_order_that you_all_may_know that I_am_having more_abundantly toward you_all.

2:5 Forgiveness for the offender

5If someone has caused grief, he hasn’t upset me, well not much, because I don’t want to be burdening you all. 6The punishment imposed on him by most of you is appropriate, 7so now you should forgive and comfort him in case excess pain should drive him out. 8That’s why I’m urging all of you to reaffirm him now with your love. 9Another reason that I wrote to you was to find out if you would stand strong and be obedient in everything. 10But anyone that you forgive for anything, I also forgive, because what I’ve also forgiven (if I have forgiven anything), it was for you all in the presence of Messiah 11so that we can’t be exploited by Satan (because we’re not ignorant about his intentions).

5But if anyone has_sorrowed, not me he_has_sorrowed, but in part, in_order_that not I_may_be_burdening all you_all.
6Worthy is to_ the _such one the punishment this, which is by the more, 7so_that instead rather you_all are to_forgive and to_comfort him, lest somehow with_the more_abundant sorrow, may_be_swallowed_up the such one.
8Therefore I_am_exhorting you_all, to_confirm toward him love.
9For/Because for this also I_wrote, in_order_that I_may_know the provenness of_you_all, whether to all things obedient you_all_are.
10But to_whomever anything you_all_are_forgiving, also_I forgive, because/for also I what have_forgiven, if anything I_have_forgiven, because_of you_all it_is in the_presence of_chosen_one/messiah, 11in_order_that not we_may_be_exploited by the Satan/(Sāţān), because/for not of_him the thinking we_are_not_knowing.

2:12 Paul’s brief ministry in Troas

12When I went to Troas[ref] to preach the good message of the messiah and an opportunity presented itself to me in the messiah, 13my spirit couldn’t relax because I found out that my brother Titos wasn’t there, so I said my goodbyes to them and continued on to Macedonia.

12And having_come to the Trōias for the good_message of_the chosen_one/messiah, and a_door to_me having_been_opened_up in the_master, 13not I_have_had relaxation in_the spirit of_me, which not to_find me Titos the brother of_me, but having_bid_goodbye to_them, I_came_out to Makedonia.

2:14 Victory through Messiah

14But we’re thankful to God who displays us as victors in the messiah, and reveals the aroma of the knowledge of the messiah, through us in every place. 15Because of Messiah, we who are being saved are a sweet fragrance to God, and also the ones perishing. 16On one hand we’re an aroma of death to those choosing death, and on the other hand, an aroma of life to those choosing life. Wow, who’s worthy enough for that? 17We’re not like the many others who’re peddling God’s message to make a profit, but we speak in front of God in sincerity. As followers of God, we speak about Messiah.

14But the to_god thankfulness be, to_the one always triumphing us in the chosen_one/messiah, and the aroma of_the knowledge of_him, revealing through us in every place.
15Because of_chosen_one/messiah a_sweet_fragrance we_are to_ the _god, in the ones being_saved and in the ones perishing, 16to_one on_one_hand an_aroma from death to death, on_the_other_hand to_one an_aroma from life to life.
And for these things who is worthy?
17For/Because not we_are like the many peddling the message of_ the _god, but as of sincerity, but as of god, in_front_of god in chosen_one/messiah we_are_speaking.
