31:1 The death of Sha’ul and his sons

Full kingdom

(1 Chr. 10:1-12)

31 Meanwhile, the Philistines were battling against Yisrael, and the Israelis fled from the Philistines but many were killed on Mt. Gilboa. 2 The Philistines stayed hard on the tail of Sha’ul and his sons, and they killed his sons Yonatan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua. 3 Then the battle was fierce around Sha’ul, then the Philistine archers sighted him and he writhed in terrible pain from the arrows. 4 He said to the man carrying his equipment, “Draw out your sword and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised Philistines come and pierce me through then torture me as I’m dying.” But the man who carried his equipment was very scared and wouldn’t do it, so Sha’ul took his sword and fell on it. 5 When the man carrying his equipment saw that the king was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. 6 So Sha’ul, three of his sons, and the man carrying his equipment all died on that same day, along with all his warriors. 7 When the Israelis on the north side of the Yezreel valley and on the east side of the Yordan saw that the Israeli warriors had fled and that Sha’ul and his sons had been killed, they left their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.

8 The next day when the Philistines came to strip anything valuable from the bodies, they found the bodies of Sha’ul and his three sons there on Mt. Gilboa. 9 They cut off the king’s head and took all his gear. Then they sent messengers all around the Philistine region to spread their good news to the temples of their idols and to all their people. 10 They Sha’ul’s armour and weapons in the temple of the Ashtorets, and hung his body on the Beyt-Shan city wall.

11 When the residents of Yabesh-Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul’s body, 12 all their warriors walked all night to take Sha’ul’s body and those of his sons, off the wall at Beyt-Shan. They took them back to Yabesh and burnt them there. 13 Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Yabesh, and fasted for seven days.

3 And_it_was_heavy the_battle against Shāʼūl and_they_found_him the_archers men with_bow and_he_was_in_severe_pain exceedingly from_the_archers.
4 And_ Shāʼūl _he/it_said his_armour(s)_of_of to_the_bearer_of draw sword_of_your and_pierce_me_through with_it lest they_should_come the_uncircumcised_men the_these and_they_will_pierce_me_through and_they_will_deal_wantonly with_me and_not he_was_willing his_armour(s)_of_of the_bearer_of if/because he_was_afraid exceedingly and_ Shāʼūl _he/it_took DOM the_drought//sword/knife and_he_fell on_it.
5 And_he/it_saw the_bearer_of his_armour(s)_of_of if/because_that Shāʼūl he_had_died and_he_fell also he on sword_of_his and_he/it_died with_him/it.
6 And_ Shāʼūl _he/it_died and_three_of his_sons_of_of his_armour(s)_of_of and_the_bearer_of also all_of men_of_his in_the_day (the)_that together.
7 And_ the_men_of _they_saw of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) who were_on_the_other_side_of the_valley and_which were_on_the_other_side_of the_Yardēn/(Jordan) if/because_that the_men_of they_had_fled of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) and_because/when Shāʼūl/(Saul) they_had_died and_his_of_sons and_they_abandoned DOM the_cities and_they_fled and_ the_Fəlishtiy _they_came and_they_lived in_them.
8 and_he/it_was from_the_next_day and_ the_Fəlishtiy _they_came to_strip DOM the_ones_slain and_they_found DOM Shāʼūl and_DOM the_three_of sons_of_his fallen on_the_mountain_of (the)_Gilboˊa.
9 And_they_cut_off DOM his/its_head and_they_stripped_off DOM armour(s)_of_his and_they_sent in_the_land_of the_Fəlishtiy all_around to_bear_the_news the_house_of their_idols_of_of and_DOM the_people.
10 And_they_put DOM armour(s)_of_his the_house_of ˊAshtārōt and_DOM corpse_of_his they_fixed on_the_wall_of Bēyt Shan.
11 And_they_heard to_him/it the_inhabitants_of Yāⱱēsh/(Jabesh) DOM that_which they_had_done the_Fəlishtiy to_Shāʼūl.
12 And_ every_of _they_arose man_of strength and_they_went all_of the_night and_they_took DOM the_corpse_of Shāʼūl and_DOM the_corpses_of his_sons_of_of from_the_wall_of Bēyt Shan and_they_came to_Yāⱱēsh and_they_burnt DOM_them there.
13 And_they_took DOM bones_of_their and_they_buried_them under the_tamarisk_tree in_Yāⱱēsh and_they_fasted seven_of days.
