TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:1-34 Israel’s camps were to be organized by tribal groupings. This arrangement may have reflected concerns for social status, access to water, and security for the Tabernacle, which represented the Lord’s presence. The Egyptian army from approximately this same era camped in a similar defensive formation to protect the sacred objects that accompanied their field campaigns.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

וְנָסַ֧ע אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֛ד

and,set_out tent/house meeting

Here Yahweh refers to the Israelites changing locations along with the tent of meeting as if the tent of meeting were a person who will set out with them. See how you translated the same use of “sets out” in 1:51.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מַחֲנֵ֥ה הַלְוִיִּ֖ם

camp the,Levites

Here, the camp of the Levites refers to the people who descended from Levi and set up their tents together. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “with the camp of the people who descended from Levi”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

בְּת֣וֹךְ הַֽמַּחֲנֹ֑ת

in_the=middle the,camps

This phrase means that the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites will travel between the camps described in 2:316 and the camps described in 2:1831. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “between one group of camps and the other group of camps”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יַחֲנוּ֙ כֵּ֣ן יִסָּ֔עוּ & לְדִגְלֵיהֶֽם

just=as camp yes/correct/thus/so set_out & by,standards,their

Here, they and their refer to all the Israelite tribes. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “As all the Israelites came so will they set out … according to the banners of their tribes”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יַחֲנוּ֙ כֵּ֣ן יִסָּ֔עוּ

just=as camp yes/correct/thus/so set_out

Here, came refers to arriving at a location and set out refers to leaving a location. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. See how you translated the same use of set out in 2:9. Alternate translation: “As they arrive in a location so will they depart from that location”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אִ֥ישׁ עַל־יָד֖וֹ

(a)_man on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in his/its=hand

This phrase is an idiom that means “each person in his own position.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “each person in his own position”

Note 7 topic: translate-unknown

לְדִגְלֵיהֶֽם

by,standards,their

See how you translated “banner” in 1:52.
