1:20 Job tore his robe and shaved his head; both were common Near East rituals that demonstrated grief. These actions sometimes substituted for self-mutilation as a physical response to shock, horror, or bad news (2:12; Gen 37:29, 34; Judg 11:35; Jer 16:6; Ezek 7:18; Amos 8:10).
• He fell to the ground, not to wail in despair, but to worship in hope (1 Pet 5:6).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וַיָּ֤קָם אִיּוֹב֙ וַיִּקְרַ֣ע
and=he/it_rose_up ʼIuōⱱ and,tore
Here the word arose may indicate that Job took action to respond to what the messengers told him, not that he stood up from a seated position. Alternate translation: “In response, Job tore”
Note 2 topic: translate-symaction
וַיִּקְרַ֣ע אֶת־מְעִל֔וֹ וַיָּ֖גָז אֶת־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_rose_up ʼIuōⱱ and,tore DOM robe,his and,shaved DOM his/its=head and,fell towards=land and,worshiped )
Job tore his robe and shaved his head to show how deeply distressed he was. If this would not be clear to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: “and tore his robe and shaved his head to show how deeply distressed he was”
Note 3 topic: translate-symaction
וַיִּפֹּ֥ל אַ֖רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ
(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_rose_up ʼIuōⱱ and,tore DOM robe,his and,shaved DOM his/its=head and,fell towards=land and,worshiped )
Be sure that it is clear in your translation that Job did not fall down accidentally. Make clear that he did these things in order to assume a posture of worship. Alternate translation: “and got down on the ground and lay flat as a gesture of worship to God”
