ULT And when the days of her purification are full, for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb, a son of its year, as a burnt offering, and a son of a pigeon or turtledove as a sin offering, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, to the priest.

UST After the time in which she is waiting to purify herself is over, that woman should bring a one-year-old lamb to the priest at the entrance of the sacred tent. She should do this whether she gives birth to a baby boy or a baby girl. The priest should offer the lamb as a wholly burned sacrifice. The woman should also bring a dove or a pigeon to the priest. He should offer it as a purifying sacrifice. This will purify her and allow her to be pure again before Yahweh.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:6 purification offering: The Hebrew word is the same as that for the sin offering (khatta’t, see study note on 4:1–5:13). This leads some scholars to think that this offering dealt only with purification or decontamination, including those cases mentioned in 5:1-6. The offering here was certainly part of a purification ritual, but it seems more likely that the sin offering repaired a lack or failure. In this context, the issue is purity rather than sin, and the focus is on restoring the woman to community fellowship, not forgiving a sinner.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּבִמְלֹ֣את ׀ יְמֵ֣י טָהֳרָ֗הּ

and,in/on/at/with,completed days_of purification,her

This expression is an idiom that refers to the completion of the period of time during which the woman who has given birth to a child is preparing to be purified—33 days for a son and 66 days for a daughter. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use an idiom from your language that does have that meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “And when the days of her purification are completed”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

יְמֵ֣י טָהֳרָ֗הּ

days_of purification,her

See how you translated this expression in 12:4.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

יְמֵ֣י טָהֳרָ֗הּ

days_of purification,her

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of purification, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “the days during which she prepares to be purified”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לְבֵן֮ א֣וֹ לְבַת֒

for,son or for,daughter

This expression references the different number of days for purification based on whether the woman gave birth to a son or a daughter. If this would not be clear, consider stating the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “whether 33 days for a son or 66 days for a daughter”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

כֶּ֤בֶשׂ בֶּן־שְׁנָתוֹ֙

lamb son_of year_of,its

The expression a son of its year is an idiom that refers to an animal that is a year old. If your language has a similar idiom, consider using it here. If not, state the meaning plainly. See how you translated the similar expression in 9:3. Alternate translation: “a year-old lamb” or “a twelve-months old lamb”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּבֶן־יוֹנָ֥ה

and,young pigeon

See how you translated this expression in 1:14.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

אֶל־פֶּ֥תַח אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֖ד אֶל־הַכֹּהֵֽן׃

to/towards entrance tent/house meeting to/towards (Some words not found in UHB: and,in/on/at/with,completed days_of purification,her for,son or for,daughter bring lamb son_of year_of,its for,burnt_offering and,young pigeon or turtledove for,sin_offering to/towards entrance tent/house meeting to/towards the=priest/officer )

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the phrases with a word that shows that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: “to the entrance of the tent of meeting where the priest is”
