TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:4 With a prayer: The king was subject to the God of heaven, and Nehemiah needed God’s guidance and provision as he made his request.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

עַל־מַה־זֶּ֖ה אַתָּ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in what? it you(ms) request

Alternate translation: “What do you want me to do for you”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֔ל

and,prayed

The implication is that Nehemiah prayed to God before he answered the king. If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this explicitly. Alternate translation: “Before I answered him, I prayed”

אֱלֹהֵ֖י הַשָּׁמָֽיִם

god the=heavens

Alternate translation: “the God who is in heaven”
