ULT And I said, “What is it?” And he said, “This is the measuring basket that is coming.” And he said, “This is their iniquity in the whole land.”[fn]
Some ancient and most modern versions have their iniquity. The Hebrew text has their eye, but this is widely thought to be an error.
UST I asked him, “What is it?”
¶ He replied, “It is a big barrel for measuring grain. But it contains a record of the sins that everyone in this nation has committed.”
BSB § “What is it?” I asked.
§ And he replied, “A measuring basket [fn] is going forth.” Then he continued, “This is their iniquity [fn] in all the land.”
5:6 Or An ephah
5:6 One Hebrew manuscript, LXX, and Syriac; most Hebrew manuscripts their appearance or (literally) their eye
OEB I said. ‘What is it?’ He said, ‘It is a measuring basket, full of the guilt of the land.’
WEB I said, “What is it?”

5:6 An efah is a measure of volume of about 22 liters, 5.8 U. S. gallons, or about 2/3 of a bushel.
NET I asked, “What is it?” And he replied, “It is a basket for measuring grain that is moving away from here.” Moreover, he said, “This is their ‘eye’ throughout all the earth.”
LSV And I say, “What [is] it?” And he says, “This—the ephah that is coming forth.” And he says, “This [is] their aspect in all the land.
FBV “What is it?” I asked.
¶ “What you see moving away is a barrel[fn] full of the sins[fn] of everyone in the country,”[fn] he replied.
5:6 Literally, “ephah,” a container for measuring grain; sometimes translated “basket.” However, in this case it obviously needs to be large enough to hold a woman inside (5:7), so the word barrel has been used for translation.
5:6 Septuagint reading. The Hebrew text currently reads “eye,” but this is hard to understand in this context, and the revised reading is only one letter different in the Hebrew.
5:6 The country of Judah.
T4T I asked him, “What is it?”
¶ He replied, “It is a big basket for measuring grain. But it represents the sins that everyone in this nation has committed.”
LEB And I asked, “What is it?” And he said, “This is a basket[fn] going out. And he said, “Thisis their iniquity[fn] throughout all the earth.

5:6 The basket (Hebrew ephah) was a standard unit of dry measure, approximately ½ bushel. The Old Testament prophets’ condemnation of unjust ephahs creates a natural association between the ephah basket and evil (see Ezek 45:10; Mic 6:10).
