16 “I have spoken these things to you so that you may not be caused to stumble.
2 “They will put you out of the synagogue; but an hour is coming when everyone who kills [you][fn] will think they are offering service to God. 3 They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me. 4 [But][fn] I have spoken these things to you, so that when {their}[fn] time comes, you may remember [them],[fn] that I told you. But I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
5 “But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 [But][fn] Because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate[fn] will not come to you. [But if I go, I will send it[fn] to you.][fn]
8 “And when that one comes, it will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I am going to {the}[fn] Father and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 [But][fn] When that one, the Spirit of truth, comes, {it}[fn] will guide you into [all][fn] truth; for it will not speak on its own, but whatever it hears, it will speak, and it will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 That one will glorify me, because it will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
15 [“All that the Father has is mine; for this reason I said that {it takes}[fn] from what is mine and will declare it to you.][fn]
16 “A little while, and you will see me {no longer};[fn] and again a little while, and you will see me [[because I go to the Father]].”[fn]
17 So the disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’; and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 [They were saying,][fn] “What is this that [he says][fn] ‘the little while’? We do not know [what he speaks].”[fn]
19 Jesus [[therefore]][fn] knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said [to them],[fn] “Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’?
20 “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice. [[But]][fn] You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
21 “When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a person has been born into the world.
22 “So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
23 “[And][fn] [On][fn] That day you will not ask [me][fn] anything. Truly, truly I say to you, {if}[fn] you ask the Father for anything {in my name, he will give it to you}.[fn] 24 Until now you have asked for nothing in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. [[But]][fn] The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in parables but will tell you plainly about {the}[fn] Father.
26 “In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask {the}[fn] Father [on your behalf];[fn] 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from {God}.[fn]
28 “{[I came forth {from}[fn] the Father][fn] And}[fn] I have come into the world; Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
29 {His}[fn] disciples say [[to him]],[fn] “See, now you speak plainly and not using any parables. 30 Now we know that you know everything and do not need anyone to ask you; in this we believe that you came from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has [[now]][fn] come, when you [[all]][fn] will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
33 “[[But]][fn] These things I have spoken to you, so that in me you may have peace. [In the world {you have}[fn] tribulation.][fn] But take courage, I have overcome the world.”
