John 12

12 Therefore, Jesus came to Bethany {six}[fn] days before the Passover, where Lazarus was [[who had been dead]],[fn] whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 They made a dinner for him there, and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those {reclining}[fn] with him.

3 Then Mary, taking a pound of [very costly][fn] pure [nard][fn] ointment, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

4 {But}[fn] Judas {Iscariot}[fn] [[son of Simon]],[fn] one of his disciples, the one who was going to betray him, says, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and, having the money box, he used to take what was put into it.

7 Jesus therefore said, “Leave her alone, {so that she may keep it}[fn] for the day of [my][fn] burial. 8 [For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me].” [fn]

9 A large crowd of the Jews {then knew}[fn] that he was there, and they came not [only][fn] because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom {he}[fn] had raised [from the dead].[fn] 10 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were [going away and][fn] believing in Jesus.

12 On the next day, the large crowd that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and they cried out, [[saying,]][fn] “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord, [and][fn] the king of Israel.”

14 And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, as it is written, 15 “Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, {your}[fn] king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.”[fn]

16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, [then][fn] they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done these things to him.

17 So the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. 18 For this reason the [[large]][fn] crowd [also][fn] met him, because they heard that he had performed this sign.

19 The Pharisees then said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the [[whole]][fn] world has gone after him.”

20 There were [[also]][fn] some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. 21 [So][fn] These men came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip comes and tells Andrew; {Andrew and Philip come and they tell Jesus}.[fn]

23 And Jesus answers them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

25 “The one who loves his life {destroys it},[fn] and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

26 “If anyone serves me, they must follow me; and where I am, [there][fn] will my servant be also. [[And]][fn] If anyone serves me, the Father will honor them.

27 “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify {your}[fn] name [[in the glory that I had with you before the world came into being]].”[fn] Then a voice came from heaven, [[saying,]][fn] “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

29 [So][fn] The crowd that stood there and heard it said [that][fn] it had thundered. [[But]][fn] Others said [[that]],[fn] “An angel has spoken to him.”

30 Jesus answered [and said],[fn] “This voice has come for your sake, not mine.

31 “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this signifying by what kind of death he was going to die.

34 [So][fn] The crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say [that][fn] the Son of Man must be lifted up? [Who [[then]][fn] is this Son of Man?]”[fn]

35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is {among}[fn] you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; and the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and going away, he hid himself [from them].[fn]

37 Although he had performed so many signs before them, they did not believe in him, 38 so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, [which he said,][fn] “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” [fn]

39 For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, 40 “Their {eyes have been blinded and their heart has been hardened},[fn] so that they may not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”[fn]

41 Isaiah said these things {because}[fn] he saw {his glory},[fn] and he spoke about him.

42 Nevertheless, many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

44 Jesus [[therefore]][fn] cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me. 45 [And whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.][fn]

46 “I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.

47 “And if anyone hears my words and does not {keep them},[fn] I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, just as the Father has told me, thus I speak.”
