John 18

18 After saying these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the {Kidron}[fn] ravine, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, the one betraying him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often gathered there with {his}[fn] disciples.

3 So Judas, having taken the cohort and officers from the chief priests and [from the][fn] Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4 {Therefore},[fn] Jesus, knowing all the things coming upon him, went out and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” {He}[fn] says to them, “I am [[Jesus]].”[fn] Now Judas, [the one betraying him],[fn] was also standing with them. 6 [So][fn] When he said [to them],[fn] [[that]][fn] “I am,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.

7 Again he asked them [[saying]],[fn] “Whom are you seeking?” And they said [[again]],[fn] “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8 {Jesus}[fn] answered [[them]],[fn] “I told you that I am. So if you are seeking me, let these others go,” 9 in order to fulfill the word he had spoken, “Of those you have given me, {I have not lost any of them}.”[fn]

10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup that {the}[fn] Father has given me?”

12 So the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 They led him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 {Now}[fn] Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was advantageous for one man to die on behalf of the people.

15 Simon Peter and {another}[fn] disciple followed {Jesus}.[fn] [But that disciple was known to the high priest,][fn] And he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

16 But Peter was standing outside at the door. So the [other][fn] disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. 17 The servant girl at the door says to Peter, “Are you also one of this man's disciples?” He said, “I am not.”

18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself.

19 The high priest asked Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered [him],[fn] “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard what I said to them; they know what I said.”

22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 [[But]][fn] Jesus {answered}[fn] him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike me?”

24 [So][fn] Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.[fn]

25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said [to him],[fn] “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

28 So they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium; it was early morning. They themselves did not enter the Praetorium, so that they would not be defiled but could eat the Passover. 29 Pilate then went [out][fn] to them and said, “What accusation do you bring [against][fn] this man?”

30 They answered and said to him, “If this one were not {doing evil},[fn] we would not have handed him over to you.” 31 [[Therefore]][fn] Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge [him][fn] according to your law.” [[So]][fn] The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put {anyone}[fn] to death,” 32 so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, [which he spoke][fn] signifying what kind of death he was going to die.

33 So {Pilate}[fn] entered the Praetorium again, called [Jesus],[fn] and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered [[him]],[fn] “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others tell you about me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?”

36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting [perhaps][fn] that I might not be delivered over to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.”

37 Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. I was born for this and I have come into the world for this, to testify {to}[fn] the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”

38 Pilate says to him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover; do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?”

40 They cried out again, [saying,][fn] “Not this one, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
