John 13

13Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2And during supper, the devil having already put into the heart that Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, should hand him over.

3[[Jesus]][fn] knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and taking a towel, girded himself. 5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash [the][fn] disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

6So he comes to Simon Peter; he says to him, “[Lord,][fn] are you washing my feet?” 7Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”

8Peter says to him, “[[Lord,]][fn] You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.” 9[Simon][fn] Peter says to him, “[Lord,][fn] Not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”

10“The one who has bathed does not need to wash, [except for his feet,][fn] but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all.” 11For he knew who would betray him. [Therefore [he][fn] said, “Not all of you are clean.”][fn]

12So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, [and sat down again, he said to them,][fn] “Do you know what I have done to you? 13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, [[how much more]][fn] you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15[For][fn] I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, you also should do.

16“Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is an apostle [greater][fn] than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

18“I do not speak concerning all of you; I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats {bread with me}[fn] has lifted up his heel against me.’[fn]

19“[From now on I tell you before][fn] It happens, so that you may believe when it happens that I am. 20Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives me; and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.”

21After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22{{The}[fn] disciples [[therefore]][fn] were looking at one another, perplexed about whom he was speaking.}[fn]

23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at the table at Jesus' side. 24[So][fn] Simon Peter signals to this one {to find out who it might be about whom he is speaking}.[fn] 25[So,][fn] Having leaned back on Jesus' chest, he says to him, “Lord, who is it?”

26Jesus answered [[and said]],[fn] “That one is to whom I will {dip the bread and give it to him.}”[fn] So when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon {Iscariot}.[fn] 27[And after the bread,][fn] [Then][fn] Satan entered into him. So Jesus says to him, “What you are doing, do quickly.”

28[But][fn] No one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29For some thought, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,” or to give something to the poor. 30So, having received the bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

31[Therefore,][fn] When he went out, Jesus says, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32[If God was glorified in him,][fn] God will also glorify him in himself. [And immediately, he will glorify him.][fn]

33“Little children, I am with you a little while longer; you will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ I say to you now.

34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. [Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.][fn] 35[For][fn] In this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered [him],[fn] “Where I am going, you cannot follow me [now],[fn] but you will follow [[me]][fn] later.” 37{Peter}[fn] says to him, “[Lord,][fn] Why can't I follow you [now]?[fn] I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered [him][fn] [[and said to him]],[fn] “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, [that][fn] the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times.
