According to John[fn]

1In the beginning[fn] was the Word[fn], and the Word was with[fn] God, and God was the Word.[fn]

2This was in the beginning with God.

3All things were made through it,[fn] and without it not even one thing was made.

What has been made 4in it {was}[fn] life, and the life was the light of men.[fn]

5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome[fn] it.

6There was a man, sent from {God},[fn] whose name was John.

7This one came for a testimony, to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.

8He was not the light, but came to testify about the light.

9The true light, which enlightens every person, was coming into the world.[fn]

10He[fn] was in the world,[fn] and the world came into being through him,[fn] yet the world did not know him.

11He came to his own, and his own did not receive him.

12[But][fn] To all who received him, he gave them the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, [nor of the will of a man,][fn] but of God.

14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have beheld his glory, glory as of the unique[fn] one from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John bears witness concerning him and has cried out, [saying,][fn] “This was he of whom [I said],[fn] ‘He who comes after me has become before me, because he was first with me.’ ”[fn]

16{For}[fn] from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

17For the law was given through Moses; [[But]][fn] grace and truth came through Jesus [Christ].[fn]

18No one has ever seen God; unique[fn] {Son},[fn] [who is][fn] in the bosom of the Father, that one has made known.

19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent [to him][fn] from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?” 20And he did not deny, [and he confessed,][fn] “I am not the Christ.”

21And they asked him [[again]],[fn] “What then? [Are you][fn] Elijah?” [And][fn] He says, “I am not.” “[[What then,]][fn] Are you the prophet?” And {he answered, “No.”}[fn]

22So they said to him, “Who are you? That we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”[fn]

24And {they were sent}[fn] from the Pharisees; 25[And they asked him][fn] [and said to him,][fn] “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, {nor Elijah, nor the prophet}?”[fn] 26John answered them, [saying,][fn] “I [[indeed]][fn] baptize [[you]][fn] with water; [[but]][fn] among you stands one whom you do not know, 27[[he is]][fn] {the one}[fn] coming after me [[who was before me,]][fn] of whom I am not {worthy}[fn] to untie the strap of his sandal.”

28These things [[indeed]][fn] took place in {Bethany}[fn] across the Jordan [[River]],[fn] where John was baptizing [[first]].[fn]

29The next day {he}[fn] sees Jesus coming [toward him] and says, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 30This is the one {about}[fn] whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who has become before me, because he was first with respect to me.’[fn] 31And I did not know him, but in order that he might be revealed to Israel, for this reason I came baptizing in water.”

32And John testified, [saying,][fn] “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and remaining upon him. 33And I did not know [him],[fn] but the one who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’[fn] 34And I have seen and have testified that this is the {chosen}[fn] of God.”

35On the next day, John was [standing][fn] [again][fn] with two of his disciples, 36And looking at Jesus walking, he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God. [[The one taking away the sin of the world.]]”[fn]

37[And][fn] {The}[fn] two disciples heard him speaking [and][fn] followed Jesus.

38[But][fn] Jesus, having turned and seen them following [[him]],[fn] says [to them],[fn] “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi (which is translated as ‘Teacher’), where are you staying?” 39He says to them, “Come and see.” [So][fn] They went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day; it was about the tenth hour. 40Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard from John and followed him.

41He finds first his own brother Simon and says to him, “We have found the Messiah,” which is translated Christ.[fn]

42[[Therefore,]][fn] He brought him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, “You are Simon, the son of {John};[fn] you will be called Cephas,” which is translated as Peter.[fn]

43The next day he[fn] wanted to go out to Galilee and found Philip. And {Jesus}[fn] says to him, “Follow me.” 44[Now][fn] Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the law and the prophets, Jesus {son}[fn] of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46[And][fn] Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and says about {him},[fn] “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48Nathanael says to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, being under the fig tree, I saw you.”

49Nathanael answered him [[and said to him]],[fn] “Rabbi, you are [[truly]][fn] the son of God,[fn] you are the king of Israel.”

50Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you [that][fn] I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he says to him, “Truly, truly I say to you [[hereafter]],[fn] you will see the heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

2And on the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2And Jesus was [also][fn] invited, and his disciples, to the wedding.

3And when the wine ran out [[, the wine of the wedding was gone]];[fn] {The mother of Jesus}[fn] says to him, “{They have}[fn] no wine.” 4[And][fn] Jesus says to her, “What is it to me and to you, woman? My hour has not yet come.”

5[[Therefore]][fn] His mother says to the servants, “Whatever he says to you, do it.”

6Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish purification [standing],[fn] each holding two or three measures.[fn] 7[[And]][fn] Jesus says to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the top. 8[And][fn] {he}[fn] says to them, “Draw out [now][fn] and bring to the master of the feast;” and they brought.

9But when the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10And he says [to him],[fn] “Every man first puts the good wine, and when they are intoxicated, [[then]][fn] the lesser; you have kept the good wine until now.” 11The [[first]][fn] beginning of the signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and {his}[fn] brothers [and {his}[fn] disciples],[fn] and they stayed there for a few days.

13And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14And he found in the temple those selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting, 15And making a whip out of cords, he drove all, both the sheep and the oxen out of the temple, [and he poured out the coins of the money changers][fn] and overturned their tables, 16and to those selling the doves he said, “Take these things away from here; do not make my Father's house a house of trade.” 17[[And]][fn] his disciples remembered that it is written, “The zeal for your house will consume me.”[fn]

18Therefore, the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign do you show [us][fn] that you do these things?”

19Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20So the Jews said, “This temple was built in forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” 21But he was speaking about the temple of {his}[fn] body. 22Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this [[to them]],[fn] and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

23But when he was in Jerusalem during the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, seeing the signs which he did; 24But {Jesus}[fn] himself did not {entrust himself to them},[fn] because he knew all men, 25And [because][fn] he had no need that anyone should testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.

3There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 2this one came to {him}[fn] at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

3Jesus answered [and said to him],[fn] “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above,[fn] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4Nicodemus says to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?”

5Jesus answered, “Truly, [truly,][fn] I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot {enter}[fn] the kingdom of {God}.[fn]

6“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7“Do not be amazed that I said to you,[fn] ‘You must be born from above.’[fn]

8“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from {and}[fn] where it goes; so is everyone who is born of the [[water and the]][fn] Spirit.”

9Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can these things be?”

10Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and you do not understand these things?”

11Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak what we know and testify what we have seen, and you[fn] do not receive our testimony.[fn]

12If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?[fn]

13And no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man [[who is in heaven]].[fn]

14And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, thus it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up, 15so that everyone who believes in him may [[not perish but]][fn] have eternal life.

16For God so loved the world, that he gave {the}[fn] unique Son [[into the world]],[fn] so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

17For God did not send {the}[fn] Son into the world in order to judge the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

18The one who believes in him is not judged; [but][fn] the one who does not believe [[in him]][fn] has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of {the unique Son of God}.[fn]

19And this is the judgment: that [the][fn] light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil.

20[For][fn] Everyone who does evil hates the light [and does not come to the light,][fn] so that their deeds may not be exposed [[as evil]].[fn]

21[[But][fn] the one who does the truth comes to the light, in order that their deeds may be revealed, that they have been done in God.][fn] [[For in God is peace established.]][fn]

22After this, Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea, and there he spent time with them and baptized. 23Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there, and people came and were baptized; 24for John had not yet been thrown into prison.

25Then a dispute arose between John's disciples and {a Jew}[fn] about purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, this one is baptizing and all are coming to him.” 27John answered and said, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28You yourselves testify to me [that][fn] I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before that one.’

29“The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices with joy because of the bridegroom's voice. This joy of mine has been fulfilled. 30That one must increase, but I must decrease.”

31The one who comes from above is above all; he who is {of}[fn] the earth is from the earth[fn] [and speaks from the earth].[fn] The one coming from heaven [is above all];[fn][fn] 32[[And]][fn] what he has seen and heard, [this][fn] he testifies, and no one receives his testimony.

33The one who has received his testimony has sealed[fn] that God is true.

34For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for {he}[fn] does not give by measure [the Spirit].[fn]

35The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

36The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; [but][fn] the one who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. [[And after these things, John was handed over.]][fn]

4So when {Jesus}[fn] knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making more disciples and baptizing than John 2— although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were — 3he left {Judea}[fn] and went back [again][fn] to Galilee. 4But he had to pass through Samaria.

5He comes to {a city of Samaria}[fn] called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph; 6and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down by the well; it was about the sixth hour.

7A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink”; 8for his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9[So][fn] The Samaritan woman says to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan [woman]?”[fn] [For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.][fn]

10Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

11She says to him [the woman],[fn] “Sir, you have neither a bucket and the well is deep; where [then][fn] do you get the living water? 12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us {the}[fn] well and drank from it himself, as well as {his sons and his livestock?”

13Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14but {the one who}[fn] drinks from the water that I will give him [will never thirst again. The water that I will give him][fn] will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

15The woman says to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” 16{He}[fn] says to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17The woman answered and said [to him],[fn] “I have no husband.” Jesus says to her, “You have said well that ‘I have no husband’; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”

19The woman says to him, “[Lord,][fn] I perceive that you are a prophet. 20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you[fn] say that in Jerusalem is [the place][fn] where people ought to worship.”

21Jesus says to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you[fn] worship the Father. 22You[fn] worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father seeks such as these to worship him [[in spirit]].[fn] 24God is spirit, and those who worship [him][fn] must worship in spirit and truth.”

25The woman says to him, “I know that Messiah is coming, the one called Christ;[fn] when that one comes, he will tell us all things.” 26Jesus says to her, “I am, the one speaking to you.”

27And [upon this,][fn] his disciples came and {were amazed}[fn] that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said [[to him]],[fn] “What are you seeking?” or “Why are you speaking with her?”

28So the woman left her water jar and went into the city and tells the people, 29“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30They [[therefore]][fn] went out of the city and came to him.

31In the meantime, {the}[fn] disciples were asking [him],[fn] saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32[But][fn] He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33[So][fn] The disciples were saying to {one another},[fn] “Did someone bring him something to eat?”

34Jesus says to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work. 35Do you not say, ‘[Yet][fn] There are four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are white for harvest. {Already}[fn] 36the one who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that [[also]][fn] that the one sowing may rejoice together with the one reaping. 37For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38I sent you to reap what you have not labored for; others have labored, and you have entered [into][fn] their labor.”

39But from that city many of the Samaritans believed [in him][fn] because of the woman's testimony, saying, “He told me everything [I have ever done].”[fn] 40So when the Samaritans {came to}[fn] him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41And many more believed [[in him]][fn] because of his word, 42and they said to the woman [that],[fn] “We no longer believe because of your {words},[fn] for we have heard [[from him]][fn] for ourselves and know that this one is [truly][fn] [[the Christ]][fn] the Savior of the world.”

43After two days, {he departed from there}[fn] to Galilee. 44For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

45So {when}[fn] he came to Galilee, [the Galileans welcomed him,][fn] the men who had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they too had gone to the feast.

46So {he}[fn] came again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum. 47[This one,][fn] Hearing that Jesus came from Judea into Galilee, went [to him][fn] and was asking [him][fn] that he might come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. 48[Therefore][fn] Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”[fn] 49The royal official says to him, “Lord, come down before {my}[fn] child dies.”

50Jesus says to him, “Go, your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke [to him][fn] and [went on his way];[fn] 51But already as {he was coming down, his servants}[fn] met him, {saying}[fn] that his {child}[fn] lives. 52[So][fn] He asked them the hour when he began to get better; they said [to him],[fn] “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left {him}.”[fn]

53{The}[fn] father knew that it was at that hour when {Jesus}[fn] had said to him, “Your son lives,” and he believed, he and his whole household.

54This [then][fn] again a second sign Jesus did, coming from Judea into Galilee.

5After this there was {a}[fn] feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2{[Now there is in Jerusalem][fn] By the Sheep Gate there is a pool},[fn] which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. 3[[Therefore]][fn] In these lay a [[great]][fn] multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and {withered}[fn] [[waiting for the moving of the water. 4For an angel went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring up of the water, was made well from whatever disease he had.]][fn]

5And a certain man was there [who had been][fn] in [his][fn] sickness for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been there a long time [already],[fn] he says to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7The sick man {answered}[fn] him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8Jesus says to him, “Rise, [[and]][fn] take up your bed, and walk.”

9And [immediately][fn] the man was made well, and he [[rose and]][fn] took up his bed and walked.

Now it was the Sabbath [on that day].[fn] 10So the Jews said to the one who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry {the}[fn] bed.”

11[But he][fn] answered them, “The one who made {me}[fn] well said to me, ‘Take up {your}[fn] bed and walk.’ ” 12[[Therefore]][fn] [They asked [him],[fn] “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up [[your bed]][fn] and walk’?”][fn] 13[But][fn] the one who was {healed}[fn] did not know who it was, {for}[fn] Jesus had slipped away, there being a crowd in the place.

14Afterward Jesus found {him}[fn] in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15[[Therefore]][fn] The man went away and {reported to}[fn] the Jews [[and said to them]][fn] that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16[And][fn] For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus [[and sought to kill him]],[fn] because he did these things on the Sabbath.

17But {he}[fn] answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18[Therefore,][fn] for this reason, the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

19{Jesus therefore answered and}[fn] said to them, “Truly, [truly,][fn] I say to you, the Son [[of Man]][fn] {can do nothing}[fn] of himself, unless he sees the Father doing [something];[fn] for {whatever}[fn] the Father does, the Son does likewise.

20“For the Father loves the Son and shows him {all that he himself is doing};[fn] and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may marvel.

21“Just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also the Son gives life to whom he wishes.

22“For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23so that all men may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.

“He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

24“Truly, truly, I say to you, [that][fn] whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

25“Truly, truly, I say to you, the {hour}[fn] is coming, [and now is,][fn] when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

26“For [just][fn] as the Father has life in himself [, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself];[fn] 27he has given him authority [[also]][fn] to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

28“Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

30“I can do nothing on my own; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the {one}[fn] who sent me.

31“If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true;[fn] 32there is another who testifies about me [, and I know that {the}[fn] testimony which he {testifies} about me is true].[fn]

33“You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth; 34But I do not accept the testimony from men, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

35“That one was the lamp that was burning and shining, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

36“But I have testimony greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to accomplish, {these very}[fn] works [that I do],[fn] testify [about me][fn] that the Father has sent me.

37“And the Father who sent me, he has [[himself]][fn] testified about me. You have never heard his voice nor seen {his}[fn] form, 38and you do not have his word abiding in you, because the one whom he sent, you do not believe in him.

39“You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and {these are they}[fn] which testify about me; 40and you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

41“I do not receive glory from men, 42but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

43“[[But]][fn] I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.

44“How can you believe, receiving glory from one another, and not seeking the glory that comes from the only [God]?[fn]

45“Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you [[before the Father]],[fn] Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

6After this, Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee [, {which is the}[fn] Tiberias].[fn] 2And a large crowd was following him, [because][fn] they {were observing}[fn] the signs which he was performing on the sick.

3Jesus went up on the mountain and sat [there][fn] with his disciples. 4Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near.

5Therefore, [Jesus,][fn] lifting up his eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming towards him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so that these men may eat?” 6He said this to test him, {for}[fn] he himself knew what he was going to do.

7[[Therefore]][fn] Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for them, so that each [[of them]][fn] might receive a little [something].”[fn]

8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him, 9“There is {a}[fn] boy [[here]][fn] who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10[[But]][fn] Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” There was plenty of {grass}[fn] in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

11{Therefore},[fn] Jesus took the [[five]][fn] loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed them [[to his disciples, and the disciples]][fn] to those who were seated,[fn] [[but]][fn] [likewise][fn] also from the fish, as much as they wanted. 12When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost [[from among them]].”[fn] 13{So}[fn] they gathered them up, and from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets.

14[When the men, having seen {what sign that}[fn] {he}[fn] performed, said [that][fn] “This is [truly][fn] the prophet who is to come into the world.”][fn]

15Therefore, Jesus knowing that they were about to come and seize him to make him king, he {withdrew}[fn] [again][fn] to the mountain {by himself}.[fn] [[And there he prayed.]][fn]

16When evening came, {his disciples}[fn] went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, they were going across the sea to Capernaum. {And it was already dark},[fn] and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18And the sea was stirred up by a great wind blowing.

19When they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty {stadia},[fn] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20But he says to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they wanted to take him into the boat, [and immediately][fn] the boat was on the land to which they were going.

22The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except one [[that his disciples had entered]],[fn] and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but only his disciples had gone away alone.

23{But other boats came}[fn] from Tiberias [near the place][fn] where they ate the bread [after the Lord had given thanks].[fn] 24{So when the crowd saw}[fn] that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum seeking Jesus. 25And [not][fn] finding him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, [you are looking for me,][fn] not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27{Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food}[fn] that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man {will give}[fn] you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

28They said [therefore][fn] to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”

29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one whom he has sent.”

30[So][fn] they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

32[Therefore][fn] Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.[fn] 33For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34They said therefore to him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

35[Therefore][fn] Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; the one coming to me will never be hungry, and the one believing in me will never be thirsty. 36But I said to you that [even][fn] you have seen [me][fn] and do not believe [[me]].[fn] 37Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not cast out the one who comes to me. 38For I have {come down from heaven, not}[fn] to do my will but the will of the {one}[fn] who sent me;

39“[This is the will of the {one}[fn] who sent me,][fn] That I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up {on}[fn] the last day. 40[For this is the will][fn] Of {my Father},[fn] that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41[So][fn] The Jews grumbled about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” 42and they said, “Is not this [Jesus, the son of Joseph,][fn] whose father [and mother][fn] we know? How can he [now][fn] say [that],[fn] ‘I have come down from heaven?’ ”

43Jesus [[therefore]][fn] answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless [the Father][fn] who sent me draws him [[to me]],[fn] and I will raise him up on the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’[fn] [[Therefore,]][fn] Everyone who has heard and learned [[the truth]][fn] from the Father comes to me.

46“Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from {God};[fn] this one has seen {the Father}.[fn]

48“I am the bread of life. 49Your fathers ate the {manna in the wilderness,}[fn] and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that [if][fn] one may eat of it and not die.

51“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. [[Therefore]][fn] If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh [[which I shall give]][fn] for the life of the world.”

52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How [[then]][fn] can this man give us [his][fn] flesh to eat?”

53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have [[eternal]][fn] life in yourselves.

54“The one who eats {my}[fn] flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

60Therefore, many of {his}[fn] disciples, when they heard this, said, “This teaching is difficult; who can listen to it?”

61{But}[fn] Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Does this offend you? 62[Therefore][fn] If you see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?

63“The spirit is what gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

64“But there are some of you who do not believe.” For {Jesus}[fn] knew from the beginning who {[who were the ones not believing and][fn] who was the one to betray him.}[fn] 65And he said, “For this reason I have told you [that][fn] no one can come to me unless it has been given [to him][fn] from by {the}[fn] Father.”

Some said, “He is good”; others [however][fn] said, “No, but he deceives the people.” 13However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jews.

14Now about the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never learned?”

16Jesus [then][fn] answered them and said, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17If anyone desires [to do][fn] his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own authority.

18“He who speaks from himself seeks his own [glory];[fn] but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent {him},[fn] this one is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19“Did not Moses give you the law [, and yet none of you keeps the law]?[fn] Why do you seek to kill me?” 20[The crowd answered [[and said]],[fn] “You have a demon; who is seeking to kill you?”][fn]

21Jesus answered and said [to them],[fn] “I did one work, and you [all][fn] marvel. 22[For this reason,][fn] Moses gave you circumcision - not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers - and on the Sabbath, you circumcise a man. 23[So][fn] If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, [[why]][fn] are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

25[Therefore][fn]some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Is this not the one they seek to kill? 26And behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing [to him].[fn] Could it be that the rulers truly knew that this is [[truly]][fn] the Christ? 27But we know where this man is from; [but][fn] when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28Then Jesus cried out, as he taught in the temple, saying, “You both know me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you do not know. 29[But][fn] I know him, for I am from him, and he sent me.”

30[Therefore][fn] they were seeking to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

31And many from the crowd believed in him and said, [that][fn] “When the Christ comes, will he do more [[of these]][fn] signs than these which this man has done?”

32[[But]][fn] The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring [these things][fn] about him, and [the chief priests and the Pharisees][fn] sent officers to arrest him.

43So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. 44And some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep; 12[[But]][fn] The hired hand, who is not a shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf [coming][fn] and leaves the sheep and flees. And the wolf snatches them and scatters them [[the sheep]];[fn] 13[[But the hired hand flees]][fn] because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep.

14“I am the good shepherd, and I know my own and my own know me, 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

16“And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must {lead}[fn] them also, and they will listen to my voice, and there will become one flock, one shepherd.

17“For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.

18“No one takes it from me [but I lay it down of my own accord].[fn] I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to {recieve}[fn] it again; this command I received from {my}[fn] Father.”

19[[Therefore]][fn] A division [again][fn] occured among the Jews because of these words. 20{But}[fn] many of them said, [[that]][fn] “He has a demon and is insane; why do you listen to him?” 21[[But]][fn] Others said, “These are not the words of one who is demon-possessed; can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

22{Then}[fn] the Feast of Dedication[fn] took place in Jerusalem. [[And]][fn] It was winter, 23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ,[fn] tell us plainly.”

25Jesus answered [them],[fn] “I told you, and you do not believe [[me]];[fn] the works that I do in my Father's name, these testify about me; 26but you do not believe because you are not of my sheep [[as I said to you]].[fn] 27[[Because]][fn] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; 28and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

29“{My}[fn] Father, who has given [me][fn] everything, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch anything from {the}[fn] Father's hand.”

30“I and {the}[fn] Father are one.”

31[[So]][fn] [Again][fn] The Jews picked up stones to stone him.

32Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many [good][fn] works from {the}[fn] Father; [[therefore]][fn] for which of them are you going to stone me?”

33The Jews answered him [[saying]],[fn] “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.”[fn]

34Jesus answered them [[and said]],[fn] “Is it not written in [[the Scripture,]][fn] {your}[fn] law, [that][fn] ‘I said, you are gods’?[fn]

35“If he called them gods [to whom the word of God came],[fn] and it cannot be broken, [the Scripture,][fn] 36do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’[fn] because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

37“If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not believe me; 38but if I do them, even though you do not [[want to]][fn] believe me, believe the works, that you may {know}[fn] [and understand][fn] that the Father is in me and I am in {the Father}.”[fn]

39[Therefore][fn] They sought [again][fn] to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

40He went away [again][fn] across the Jordan [to the place][fn] where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41And many came to him and they said, [that][fn] “John did no sign, but everything that {John}[fn] said about this man was true.” 42{And}[fn] many believed in him [there].[fn]

11Now there was a certain man who was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister [Martha].[fn] 2{It was}[fn] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, [[and}][fn] whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3So {the sisters}[fn] sent to him, saying, “Lord, the one whom you love is sick.”

4But when Jesus heard it, he said, “{This}[fn] sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of [[his]][fn] God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So when he heard that he was sick, {he}[fn] stayed in the place where he was for two days.

7Then after this he says [to {the}[fn] disciples],[fn] “Let us go into Judea [again].”[fn] 8{The}[fn] disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?”

9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, they do not stumble, because they see the light of this world; 10but if anyone walks in the night, they stumble, because the light is not in them.” 11These things he said, and after this he says to them, “Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him.”

12So his disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved.”[fn]

13Now Jesus had spoken about his {death},[fn] but they thought [that][fn] he was speaking about the rest of sleep.

14[Then][fn] Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus [[our friend]][fn] has died, 15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

16So Thomas, called the Twin, said to {the}[fn] fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

17When Jesus arrived [[in Bethany]],[fn] he found that Lazarus had [already][fn] been in the tomb for four days. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.

19And many of the Jews had come to [[those around]][fn] Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.

20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in {the}[fn] house.

21Martha said to {Jesus},[fn] “[Lord,][fn] If you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22[But][fn] Even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”

23Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise.” 24Martha says to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

25[[So]][fn] Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection [and the life].[fn] Whoever believes in me, though they die, shall live, 26and everyone who lives and believes [in me] shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27She says to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ,[fn] the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

28And having said {this},[fn] she went away and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, [[that]][fn] “The teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29[But][fn] When she heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come {into}[fn] the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.

31So when the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, {thinking highly of her}[fn] that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

32Then Mary, when she came to where Jesus was and saw him, fell {at}[fn] his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”

35Jesus wept. 36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”

38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39Jesus says, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, says to him, “Lord, there is already a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

40Jesus says to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone [[from where the dead man was lying]].[fn] And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”

43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus says to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what {he}[fn] did, believed in him. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50Nor do you {consider}[fn] that it is to {your}[fn] advantage that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

53From that day on, they plotted [[together]][fn] to kill him. 54Therefore, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he {stayed}[fn] with his disciples.

55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the region before the Passover to purify themselves. 56So they were looking for Jesus and said to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast?” 57{But}[fn] the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, they should report it, so that they might seize him.

12Therefore, Jesus came to Bethany six days before the Passover, where Lazarus was [[who had been dead]],[fn] whom Jesus[fn] had raised from the dead. 2They made a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining with him.

3Then Mary, taking a pound of very costly pure nard perfume, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4But Judas Iscariot [[son of Simon]],[fn] one {of}[fn] his disciples, the one who was going to betray him, says, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and, having the money box, he used to take what was put into it.

7Jesus therefore said, “Leave her alone, {so that she may keep it}[fn] for the day of my burial; 8for you always have the poor [with you, but you do not always have me].” [fn]

9A large crowd of the Jews then knew that he was there, and they came not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, 11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

12On the next day, the large crowd that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and they cried out, “Hosanna! {Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord, and the king of Israel}.”[fn]

14And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, as it is written, 15“Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.”[fn]

16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done these things to him.

17So the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. 18For this reason the crowd [also][fn] met him, because they heard that he had performed this sign.

19The Pharisees then said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. 21So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip comes and tells Andrew, {Andrew and Philip come and they tell Jesus}.[fn]

23And Jesus answers them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

24“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

25“The one who loves his life {destroys it},[fn] and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

26“If anyone serves me, they must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor them.

27“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28{Father, glorify your name}.”[fn] Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

29The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

30Jesus answered and said, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine.

31“Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

34The crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

35So Jesus said to them, “The light is {among}[fn] you for a little while longer. Walk {while}[fn] you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; and the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36{While}[fn] you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and going away, he hid himself from them.

37Although he had performed so many signs before them, they did not believe in him, 38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” [fn]

39For this reason they could not believe, because again Isaiah said, 40“Their eyes have been blinded and their heart has been hardened, so that they may not see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”[fn]

41Isaiah said these things {because}[fn] he saw his glory, and he spoke about him.

42Nevertheless, many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

44Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me, 45and whoever sees me sees the one who sent me.

46“I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in darkness.

47“And if anyone hears my words and does not {keep them},[fn] I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49For I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. 50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, just as the Father has told me, thus I speak.”

13Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2And {during}[fn] supper, the devil having already put into the heart that Judas Simon Iscariot should betray him,

3[[Jesus]][fn] knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and taking a towel, girded himself. 5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

6So he comes to Simon Peter; he says to him, “Lord, are you washing my feet?” 7Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”

8Peter says to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.” 9Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”

10“The one who has bathed {does not need to wash, except for his feet},[fn] but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all.” 11For he knew who would betray him; therefore he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12So when he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, {and sat down}[fn] again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, you also should do.

16“Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is an apostle greater than the one who sent him. 17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

18“I do not speak concerning all of you; I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats my bread [[with me]][fn] has lifted up his heel against me.’[fn]

19“From now on I tell you before it happens, so that you may believe when it happens that I am. 20Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives me; and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.”

21After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22The disciples were looking at one another, perplexed about whom he was speaking.

23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at the table at Jesus' side. 24So Simon Peter signals to this one to find out who it might be about whom he is speaking. 25Leaning back against Jesus' chest, he says to him, “Lord, who is it?”

26Jesus answered, “It is the one {to whom I will give the piece of bread after I have dipped it}.”[fn] So when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to {Judas, son of Simon Iscariot}.[fn] 27And after the bread, then Satan entered into him. So Jesus says to him, “What you are doing, do quickly.”

28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29For some thought, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,” or to give something to the poor. 30So, having received the morsel, he immediately went out. And it was night.

31Therefore, when he went out, Jesus says, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him; 32{if God has been glorified in him,}[fn] and God will glorify him in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33“Little children, I am with you a little while longer; you will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ I say to you now.

34“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

36Simon Peter says to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered [him],[fn] “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.” 37Peter says to him, “Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will {not}[fn] crow until you have denied me three times.

14“Do not let your hearts be troubled; believe in God and believe in me. 2In my Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, {would I have told you that I go}[fn] to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am, you may be also. 4{And you know the way to the place where I am going}.”[fn]

5Thomas says to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6Jesus says to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8Philip says to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9Jesus says to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10“Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me {does his}[fn] works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if not, believe [[me]][fn] because of the works themselves.

12“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to {the}[fn] Father.

13“And whatever you ask [[the Father]][fn] in my name, I will do this, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14[“If you ask anything [of me][fn] in my name, {I will do it}.[fn]][fn]

15“If you love me, [you will][fn] keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate,[fn] so that it[fn] may be with you forever, 17the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot receive, because it neither sees it nor knows it; you know it, because it remains with you and will be in you.

18“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.

19“Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

21“Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

22Judas (not Iscariot) says to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

25“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,[fn] which the Father will send in my name, that one will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have said to you.

27“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because [[I said]][fn] I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

29“And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.

30“I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31but I do as the Father has {commanded me},[fn] so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.”

15“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, he prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

3“You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you;

4“Abide in me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in me.

5“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, this one bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

6“If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7“If you abide in me and my words abide in you, {ask}[fn] whatever you wish, and it will be done [for you].[fn]

8“In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and [[so shall you]][fn] become my disciples.

9“Just as the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.

10“If you keep my commandments, you will {abide}[fn] in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.

11“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may {be}[fn] in you, and that your joy may be full.

12“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

13“No one has greater love than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

14“You are my friends if you do {what}[fn] I command you. 15No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

16“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

17“These things I command you, that you love one another. 18If the world hates you, know that it has hated me first before [you].[fn]

19“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

20“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.

22“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23Whoever hates me hates my Father also.

24“If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25But this is to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’[fn]

26“When the Advocate[fn] comes, which I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit[fn] of truth that proceeds from the Father, that one will bear witness about me; 27and you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.”

16“I have spoken these things to you so that you may not be caused to stumble.

2“They will make you outcasts from the synagogue; but an hour is coming when everyone who kills [you][fn] will think they are offering service to God. 3They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me. 4But I have spoken these things to you, so that when {their}[fn] time comes, you may remember [them],[fn] that I told you. But I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

5“But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

7“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate[fn] will not come to you; but if I go, I will send it[fn] to you.

8“And when that one comes, it will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment; 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10concerning righteousness, because I am going to {the}[fn] Father and you will see me no longer; 11concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13But when that one, the Spirit of truth, comes, it[fn] will guide you into all truth; for it will not speak on its own, but whatever it hears, it will speak, and it will declare to you the things that are to come. 14That one will glorify me, because it will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

15“All that the Father has is mine; for this reason I said that {it takes}[fn] from what is mine and will declare it to you.

16“A little while, and you will see me {no longer};[fn] and again a little while, and you will see me [[because I go to the Father]].”[fn]

17So some of the disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’; and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18They were saying, “What is this [that he says] ‘the little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”

19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’?

20“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

21“When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a person has been born into the world.

22“So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

23“And on that day you will not ask me anything. Truly, truly I say to you, {if}[fn] you ask the Father for anything {in my name, he will give it to you}.[fn] 24Until now you have asked for nothing in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

25“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.

26“In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from {God}.[fn]

17Jesus spoke these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, so that {the}[fn] Son [[also]][fn] may glorify you, 2just as you have given him authority over all flesh, so that he may give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and the one whom you have sent, Jesus Christ.[fn]

18After saying these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron ravine, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. 2Now Judas, the one betraying him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often gathered there with his disciples.

10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

12So the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. 13They led him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was better for one man to die on behalf of the people.

15Simon Peter and {another}[fn] disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was known to the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

16But Peter was standing outside at the door. So the other disciple, {who was}[fn] known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. 17The servant girl at the door says to Peter, “Are you also one of this man's disciples?” He said, “I am not.”

18Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself.

19The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and I have said nothing in secret. 21Why do you {ask}[fn] me? {Ask} those who have heard what I said to them; they know what I said.”

22When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike me?”

25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

28So they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters; it was early morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so that they would not be defiled but could eat the Passover. 29Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring [against][fn] this man?”

30They answered and said to him, “If this one were not {doing evil},[fn] we would not have handed him over to you.” 31Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke signifying what kind of death he was going to die.

33Pilate entered the headquarters again, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered [[him]],[fn] “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others tell you about me?” 35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?”

36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought [then] so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.”

37Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”

38Pilate says to him, “What is truth?” And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in him. 39But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover; do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?” 40They cried out again, saying, “Not this one, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.

19Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and wrapped him in a purple robe. 3[And they came up to him,][fn] and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.

4Pilate went out again and says to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”

5So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate says to them, “{Behold}[fn] the man!”

13So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic, Gabbatha. 14Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He says to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

16Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus [[and led him away]],[fn] 17and he went out, bearing his [own][fn] cross, he went out to the place called Skull Place, which is called Golgotha in Hebrew.[fn] 18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.

19Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, {in Latin, and in Greek}.[fn]

21So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 24So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture [which says],[fn] “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”[fn] So the soldiers did these things.

25But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he says to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27Then he says to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, says (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”[fn] 29A vessel full of sour wine was lying there; so they {put a sponge full of the sour wine on hyssop}[fn] and brought it to his mouth. 30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31So the Jews, since it was the day of Preparation, in order not to leave the bodies on the cross during the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), asked Pilate to have their legs broken and removed. 32The soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and the other who had been crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, 34but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35And the one who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you [also][fn] {may believe}.[fn] 36For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, “Not a bone of his will be broken.”[fn] 37And again another Scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they pierced.”[fn]

38After these things, Joseph from Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body [of Jesus];[fn] and Pilate allowed it. So he came and took away his body. 39Nicodemus also came, the one who had first come to {him}[fn] at night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.

40They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the custom of the Jews for burial.

41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42Therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

20On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came early, while it was still dark, to the tomb and saw the stone removed from [[the door of]][fn] the tomb. 2So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved and says to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

3So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.

4The two were running together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came first to the tomb, 5and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

6So Simon Peter [also][fn] comes, following him, and went into the tomb, and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7and the face cloth, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself.

8Then the other disciple, who had come first to the tomb, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for they did not yet understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

11But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb, 12and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13And they say to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She says to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”

14Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus says to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, thinking that he was the gardener, says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

16Jesus says to her, “Mary.” She turns and says to him [in Hebrew],[fn] “Rabboni,” which means Teacher.

17Jesus says to her, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to {the}[fn] Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.’ ”

18Mary Magdalene came, {announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord},”[fn] and that he had said these things to her.

19On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were [[assembled]][fn] for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. 26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors being locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27Then he says to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

28Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”[fn] 29Jesus says to him, “Have you believed [[Thomas]][fn] because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

7Therefore, that disciple whom Jesus loved says to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was naked, and threw himself into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits away, dragging the net of fish.

9When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10Jesus says to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11[So][fn] Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn.

12Jesus says to them, “Come and have breakfast.” [But][fn] no one of the disciples dared to question him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish.

14This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

15So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus says to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John,[fn] do you love me more than these?” He says to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He says to him, “Feed my lambs.”

16He says to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John,[fn] do you love me?” He says to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He says to him, “Shepherd my sheep.”

17He says to him the third time, “Simon, son of John,[fn] do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he says to him, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” He says to him [Jesus], “Tend my sheep.”

18“Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19This he said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And having said this, he says to him, “Follow me.”

20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved [following],[fn] the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21[When][fn] Peter saw him, he says to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22Jesus says to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? 23So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, [what is that to you]?”[fn]

24This is the disciple who testifies about these things and who wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
