MSG(8-10)Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:6-15 In the face of the false teachers’ enticing arguments, Paul exhorts the Colossians to stand firm in their faith in Christ, for in Christ lives all the fullness of God, and their spiritual experience is complete in him.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ὅτι

because

Here, the word For introduces the reason why the Colossians need to watch out for any teaching that is “not according to Christ” (2:8): Christ is God and only he provides access to God. Use a connector that makes this clear in your language. Alternate translation: “You must beware of any teaching that ignores Christ, because”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικεῖ πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς Θεότητος σωματικῶς

in him /is/_dwelling all the fullness ˱of˲_the Deity bodily

Paul speaks as if Jesus were a place in which complete divinity (fullness of deity) lives (dwells). This metaphor indicates that Jesus, who is human (in bodily form), is truly and fully God. If this metaphor does not indicate Jesus’ full divinity and full humanity in your language, you could express this idea with a metaphor that does indicate this or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: “he is both fully God and fully man”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς Θεότητος

all the fullness ˱of˲_the Deity

If your language does not use abstract nouns to express the ideas behind fullness and deity, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: “everything that it means to be God” or “everything that belongs fully to God”
