TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:18 Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God: The law was to be read every seven years at the Festival of Shelters (Deut 31:10-12). It reminded the people of the covenant stipulations and of God’s past acts of grace.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַ֠יִּקְרָא בְּסֵ֨פֶר תּוֹרַ֤ת הָאֱלֹהִים֙

and=he/it_called in/on/at/with,book law the=ʼₑlhīmv

He means Ezra, as stated explicitly in 8:3 and 8:13. The implication is that Ezra continued to read to the family and religious leaders who had asked him to keep teaching them. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could say this explicitly. Alternate translation: “Each day throughout the festival, Ezra continued to read to the leaders from the Law of Moses”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

י֣וֹם ׀ בְּי֔וֹם

day in/on=day

This is an idiom that means each day or every single day.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / merism

מִן־הַיּוֹם֙ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הָאַחֲר֑וֹן

from/more_than the=day the,first until the=day the,last

The story is describing the entire festival by speaking of two extreme parts of it, its first day and its last day. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this meaning with a single phrase. Alternate translation: “throughout the entire festival”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־חָג֙ שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֔ים וּבַיּ֧וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֛י עֲצֶ֖רֶת כַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט

and,celebrated festival seven days and,in/on/at/with,day the,eighth assembly according_to_the,ordinance

They means the people of Judah. The ordinance refers to the command in the Law of Moses to end the Festival of Tabernacles by gathering all of the Israelites together for a closing ceremony after seven days. Alternate translation: “The people of Judah celebrated the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days, and on the eighth day they held a closing ceremony together, as the Law of Moses commanded”

Note 5 topic: translate-ordinal

וּבַיּ֧וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֛י

and,in/on/at/with,day the,eighth

Alternate translation: “on day 8”
