Psalmes 81

P S A L. LXXX.

1 The Psalmist in his prayer complaineth of the miseries of the Church. 8 Gods former fauours are turned into iudgements. 14 Hee prayeth for deliuerance.

¶ To the chiefe Musician vpon Shoshannim Eduth, A Psalme of Asaph.

LXXXI¶ Giue eare, shepheard of Israel, thou that leadest Ioseph like a flocke, thou that dwellest betweene the Cherubims, shine forth. 2[fn]Before Ephraim and Beniamin, and Manasseh, stirre vp thy strength: and come and saue vs. 3Turne vs againe, O God: and cause thy face to shine, and we shall bee saued. 4[fn]O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou bee angry against the prayer of thy people? 5Thou feedest them with the bread of teares: and giuest them teares to drinke in great measure. 6Thou makest vs a strife vnto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselues. 7Turne vs againe, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saued. 8Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it. 9Thou preparedst roome before it: and didst cause it to take deepe root, and it filled the land. 10[fn]The hilles were couered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars. 11She sent out her boughs vnto the Sea: and her branches vnto the riuer. 12Why hast thou then broken downe her hedges: so that all they which passe by the way, doe plucke her? 13The boare out of the wood doth waste it: and the wild beast of the field doth deuoure it. 14Returne, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: looke downe from heauen, and behold, and visit this vine: 15And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted: and the branch that thou madest strong for thy selfe. 16It is burnt with fire, it is cut downe: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance. 17Let thy hand be vpon the man of thy right hand: vpon the sonne of man, whom thou madest strong for thy selfe. 18So will not wee goe backe from thee: quicken vs, and we will call vpon thy Name. 19Turne vs againe, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine, and wee shall be saued.

P S A L. LXXXI.

1 An exhortation to a solemne praising of God. 4 God challengeth that duetie by reason of his benefits. 8 God exhorting to obedience, complaineth of their disobedience, which proueth their owne hurt.

¶ To the chiefe Musician vpon Gittith. A Psalme [fn]of Asaph.

LXXXI¶ Sing alowd vnto God our strength: make a ioyfull noise vnto the God of Iacob. 2Take a Psalme, and bring hither the timbrell: the pleasant harpe with the psalterie. 3Blow vp the trumpet in the new Moone: in the time appointed on our solemne feast day. 4For this was a Statute for Israel: and a Law of the God of Iacob. 5[fn]This he ordained in Ioseph for a testimonie, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language, that I vnderstood not. 6[fn]I remoued his shoulder from the burden: his handes were deliuered from the pots. 7[ref][fn]Thou calledst in trouble, and I deliuered thee, I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proued thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah. 8Heare, O my people, and I will testifie vnto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken vnto me: 9There shall no strange God be in thee: neither shalt thou worship any strange God. 10I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. 11But my people would not hearken to my voice: and Israel would none of me. 12[ref][fn]So I gaue them vp vnto their owne hearts lust: and they walked in in their owne counsels. 13O that my people had hearkned vnto me: and Israel had walked in my wayes! 14I should soone haue subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their aduersaries. 15[fn]The haters of the LORD should haue submitted themselues vnto him: but their time should haue endured for euer. 16[fn]Hee should haue fedde them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honie out of the rocke, should I haue satisfied thee.
