Readers’ Version

Literal Version

23Then Iyyov responded to Elifaz and the others:

2Even today my complaint is bitter.

≈ I’m groaning because my situation is so difficult.

3If only I knew where to find him

I would have gone to his place.

4I would present my case to him,

≈ and I would expound all my arguments,

5I want to know how he’d answer,

≈ and to understand what he’ll say to me.

6Would he use his incredible power to dispute my case?

No, surely he’d pay attention to me.

7An honest person could reason with him there,

and I would be set free forever by the one judging me.

8Look, I go to the east but he isn’t there,

≈ and to the west but I can’t detect him there.

9He works in the north, but I can’t see him,

≈ and when he turned south, I didn’t spot him.

10Nevertheless, he knows the path that I’ve taken.

He’s tested me and I’ve come out like refined gold.

11My feet have followed in his tracks.

≈ I’ve kept to the path without wavering.

12I’ve always obeyed what he commanded,

and I’ve valued his words more than my daily food.

13But he’s independent so who could dissuade him?

≈ He does whatever he wants to do.

14He carries out what’s been decided for me,

≈ and he knows so much about me.

15That’s why I’m terrified in his presence,

≈ I’m afraid of him when I consider all that.

16God has caused me to be faint-hearted.

≈ The provider has terrified me.

17I haven’t been silenced when facing the darkness,

or by the fog that covers my face.

23and_ ʼIyyōⱱ/(Job) _he_answered and_he_said.
2Also the_day the_rebellion my_complaint_of_of hand_of_my it_is_heavy on groaning_of_my.
3Who will_he_give I_knew and_I_will_find_him I_will_come to place_of_his.
4Let_me_set_in_order before_him a_case and_my_of_mouth let_me_fill arguments.
5I_want_to_know the_words/messages which_he_will_answer_me and_I_want_to_understand what will_he_say to_me.
6With_greatness_of power[fn] will_he_conduct_a_case with_me no surely he he_will_put on_me.
7There an_upright_person will_be_reasoning with_him/it and_I_will_deliver to_perpetuity from_my_of_judge.
8Here forward I_go and_not_existing_he and_backwards and_not I_perceive to_him/it.
9the_left_side when_he_acts and_not I_see_him he_turns the_right_side and_not I_see_him.
10If/because he_knows the_way with_me he_has_tested_me like_gold I_will_come_forth.
11On_his_of_step foot_of_my it_has_taken_hold its_road/course I_have_kept and_not I_have_turned_aside.
12The_command_of his_lips_of_of and_not I_have_ceased more_than_of_my_portion I_have_treasured_up the_words/messages_of his_mouth_of_of.
13And_he is_(in)_one and_who will_he_turn_him_back and_his_of_self it_has_desired and_he_has_done.
14If/because he_performs decree_of_my and_like_them many with_him/it.
15Therefore yes/correct/thus/so of_him I_am_terrified I_consider and_I_am_in_dread from_him.
16And_god he_has_made_timid heart_of_my and_the_almighty he_has_terrified_me.
17If/because not I_have_been_silenced from_face/in_front_of darkness and_from_before_of_me it_covers gloom.
