TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:1-70 This chapter is the first of Ezra’s major digressions from the main story line. The returning exiles needed to keep track of who the true Jews were so that the community could maintain its identity (by knowing whom they could marry) and theological purity (by knowing who could worship at the Temple). This list is not an initial list (cp. Neh 7:6-73) of all the Jews who returned to Jerusalem but a slightly later list (after Sheshbazzar had died) of people who had settled in their towns.

sons_of Delaiah sons_of Tobiah sons_of Nekoda six hundreds fifty and,two

Alternate translation: “In this group were 652 men from the descendants of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּנֵי־דְלָיָ֥ה בְנֵי־טוֹבִיָּ֖ה בְּנֵ֣י נְקוֹדָ֑א

sons_of Delaiah sons_of Tobiah sons_of Nekoda

Here, sons means descendants. Either the men named here were not recognized clan heads of Israel, or the 652 people could not prove that they were descendants of these men. Alternate translation: “The descendants of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

דְלָיָ֥ה & טוֹבִיָּ֖ה & נְקוֹדָ֑א

Delaiah & Tobiah & Nekoda

These are the names of three men.
