TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:11 I went down: There is ambiguity over who is speaking here. The NLT presents it as the beginning of the young woman’s speech, though it could just as plausibly be a continuation of the young man’s. The trip to the walnut grove is a poetic way of expressing desire for a romantic meeting.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

אֶל־גִּנַּ֤ת אֱגוֹז֙ יָרַ֔דְתִּי

to/towards orchard nut_trees went_down

The speaker is using the possessive form to describe an area where walnut trees grow. If this is not clear in your language, you could clarify the relationship for your readers. Alternate translation: “To the the nut tree garden I went went down” or “To the place where walnut trees grow I went down”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / extrainfo

to/towards orchard nut_trees went_down to=see in/on/at/with,new_growth the,valley to=see whether,budded the,vines in_bloom the,pomegranates & (Some words not found in UHB: to/towards orchard nut_trees went_down to=see in/on/at/with,new_growth the,valley to=see whether,budded the,vines in_bloom the,pomegranates )

It is difficult to know with certainty who is speaking in these two verses and because of this Bible scholars have different opinions about who is speaking here. Because the author does not say who is speaking you should not indicate who is speaking in the text of your translation. However, if you are using section headers to indicate who is speaking the speaker could be: (1) the man in both verses. If you decide the man is speaking in both these verses you can follow the example of the UST and include theses two verses under the section heading for 6:4-11 that indicates the man is speaking. (2) the woman in both verses. If you decide the woman is speaking in both of these verses you can put a section header at the top of 6:11 indicating that the woman is speaking.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

אֶל־גִּנַּ֤ת אֱגוֹז֙ יָרַ֔דְתִּי

to/towards orchard nut_trees went_down

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases. Alternate translation: “I went down to the garden of the nut tree”
