AICNT ACTs Chapter 5

ACTs 5 ©

5Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property 2and kept back part of the proceeds, with his wife's knowledge, and brought only a portion of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds of the land? 4While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why have you conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.” 5And hearing these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last, and great fear came upon all who heard [[these things]].[fn] 6The young men rose and wrapped him up, and carried him out and buried him.

7About three hours later, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. 8Peter asked her, “Tell me, did you sell the land for this much?” She said, “Yes, for that much.” 9But Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. The young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard these things.

12Now many signs and wonders were done among the people through the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. 13Of {the rest},[fn] no one dared to join them, but the people magnified them.

14And more and more believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, in order that Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.

16The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

17Then the high priest and all those with him, the sect of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy 18and they laid their hands on the apostles and put them in public custody.

19But an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors[fn] during the night, brought them out, and said, 20“Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”

21When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest and those with him arrived, they called together the council and all the elders of the sons of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22But the officers who went did not find them in the prison; so they returned and reported, 23saying, “We [[indeed]][fn] found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”

24When they heard these words, both the chief priest and the commander of the temple [[and the high priests]],[fn] they were perplexed about them, wondering what this might lead to. 25Then someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.”

26Then the captain went with the officers and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

27When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, 28saying, “Did we not strictly order you not to teach in this name? Yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”

29But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. 30The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32And we are witnesses of these words, and the Holy Spirit,[fn] which God gave to those who obey him.”

33But when they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

34However, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a respected teacher of the law, stood up in the council and ordered the {men}[fn] to be put outside for a short time. 35He said to them, “Men of Israel, be careful what you are about to do with these men. 36For before these days, Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37After him, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and led [[a considerable number of]][fn] people after him; he also perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38So now I tell you, stay away from these men and let them be; for if this plan or this work is of human origin, it will be overthrown; 39but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them, lest you be found fighting against God.”

They were persuaded by him, 40and after calling the apostles, they had them flogged, ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released [[them]].[fn]

41So they went on their way from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were considered worthy to suffer dishonor for {the name}.[fn]

42And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and proclaiming[fn] the Christ, Jesus.[fn]
