TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:17-40 The success of the apostles’ ministry again aroused strong opposition (cp. 4:1-3). The wealthy and powerful Sadducees controlled the Temple establishment and had a Temple police force at their disposal. They opposed belief in the resurrection and were determined not to allow the apostles to proclaim their message about the resurrection of Jesus unchallenged. They also sensed that their hold on the Jewish people was loosening, so, filled with jealousy, they attacked the apostles.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἰδοὺ, οἱ ἄνδρες

behold the men

This person says Behold to get the council members to focus their attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a similar expression that you can use here in your translation. Alternate translation: [Right now the men]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / you

ἔθεσθε

˱you_all˲_put

Here the word you refers to the captain of the temple and the chief priests and so it is plural.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ, ἑστῶτες

in in the temple /having/_stood

Only priests were allowed inside the temple building, so when the messenger says the temple here, he means the courtyard associated with the temple. Alternate translation: [standing in the temple courtyard]
