TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:17-40 The success of the apostles’ ministry again aroused strong opposition (cp. 4:1-3). The wealthy and powerful Sadducees controlled the Temple establishment and had a Temple police force at their disposal. They opposed belief in the resurrection and were determined not to allow the apostles to proclaim their message about the resurrection of Jesus unchallenged. They also sensed that their hold on the Jewish people was loosening, so, filled with jealousy, they attacked the apostles.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

τοῦτον

this_‹one›

Peter is using the demonstrative adjective this as a noun to refer to a specific person, Jesus. (ULT shows that by adding one.) Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could specify whom Peter means. Alternate translation: [Jesus] or [this Jesus]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ

˱by˲_the right_‹hand› ˱of˲_him

Peter is using the adjective right as a noun in order to indicate the right side. See how you translated the similar expression in [2:25](../02/25.md). Alternate translation: [to his right side]

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτοῦ

˱by˲_the right_‹hand› ˱of˲_him

God placing Jesus at his right side was a symbolic way of giving him great honor. Alternate translation: [to a place of great honor next to him]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τοῦ δοῦναι μετάνοιαν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν

¬which ˓to˒_give repentance ¬the ˱to˲_Israel and forgiveness ˱of˲_sins

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the ideas behind the words repentance and forgiveness, you could express the same ideas with verbs. Alternate translation: [to give the people of Israel an opportunity to repent and have God forgive their sins]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

Ἰσραὴλ

˱to˲_Israel

Here, Israel represents the people who belong to the nation of Israel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the people of Israel]
