Moff ACTs Chapter 2

ACTs 2 ©

2During the course of the day of Pentecost they were all together, 2when suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a violent blast of wind, which filled the whole house where they were seated. 3They saw tongues like flames distributing themselves, one resting on the head of each, 4and they were all filled with the holy Spirit — they began to speak in foreign tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to express themselves. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. 6So when this sound was heard, the multitude gathered in bewilderment, for each heard them speaking in his own language. 7All were amazed and astonished. "Are these not all Galileans," they said, "who are speaking? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native tongue? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents in Mesopotamia, in Judaea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia, 10in Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and the districts of Libya round Cyrene, visitors from Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabians, we hear these men talking of the triumphs of God in our own languages!" 12They were all amazed and quite at a loss. "What can it mean?" they said to one another. 13Some others sneered, "They are brim-full of new wine!"

14But Peter stood up along with the eleven, and raising his voice he addressed them thus: "Men of Judaea and residents in Jerusalem, let everyone of you understand this--attend to what I say: 15these men are not drunk, as you imagine. Why, it is only nine in the morning! 16No, this is what was predicted by the prophet Joel--

17

In the last days, saith God,

then will I pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

your sons and daughters shall prophesy,

your young men shall see visions,

your old men shall dream dreams:

18

on my very slaves and slave-girls in those days will I pour out my Spirit,

and they shall prophesy.

19

And I will display wonders in heaven above

and signs on earth below,

blood and fire and vapour of smoke:

20

the sun shall be changed into darkness

and the moon into blood,

ere the great, open Day of the Lord arrives.

21

And everyone who invokes the name of the Lord shall be saved.

22Men of Israel, listen to my words. Jesus the Nazarene, a man accredited to you by God through miracles, wonders, and signs which God performed by him among you (as you yourselves know), 23this Jesus, betrayed in the predestined course of God's deliberate purpose, you got wicked men to nail to the cross and murder; 24but God raised him by checking the pangs of death. Death could not hold him. 25For David says of him,

I saw the Lord before me evermore;

lest I be shaken, he is at my right hand.

26

My heart is glad,

my tongue exults,

my very flesh will rest in hope,

27

because thou wilt not forsake my soul in the grave,

nor let thy holy one suffer decay.

28

Thou hast made known to me the paths of life,

thou wilt fill me with delight in thy presence.

29Brothers, I can speak quite plainly to you about the patriarch David; he died and was buried and his tomb remains with us to this day. 30(He was a prophet; he knew God had sworn an oath to him that he would seat one of his descendants on his throne; 31so he spoke with a prevision of the resurrection of the Christ, when he said that he was not forsaken in the grave nor did his flesh suffer decay. 32This Jesus God raised, as we can all bear witness. 33Uplifted then by God's right hand, and receiving from the Father the long-promised holy Spirit, he has poured on us what you now see and hear.) 34For it was not David who ascended to heaven; David says,

The Lord said to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand,

35

till I make your enemies a footstool for your feet'. 36So let all the house of Israel understand beyond a doubt that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this very Jesus whom you have crucified."

37When they heard this, it went straight to their hearts; they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what are we to do?" 38"Repent," said Peter, "let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins; then you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. 39For the promise is meant for you and for your children and for all who are far off, for anyone whom the Lord our God may call to himself." 40And with many another appeal he urged and entreated them. "Save yourselves," he cried, "from this crooked generation!" 41So those who accepted what he said were baptized; about three thousand souls were brought in, that day. 42They devoted themselves to the instruction given by the apostles and to fellowship, breaking bread and praying together. 43Awe fell on everyone, and many wonders and signs were performed by the apostles [in Jerusalem]. 44The believers all kept together; they shared all they had with one another, 45they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds among all, as anyone might be in need. 46Day after day they resorted with one accord to the temple and broke bread together in their own homes; they ate with a glad and simple heart, 47praising God and looked on with favour by all the people. Meantime the Lord added the saved daily to their number.
