TSNTyndale Study Notes:

32:20-24 Moses accepted the terms offered by Reuben and Gad. If they joined their kindred in fighting the Canaanites, they would fulfill their end of the agreement and could then return to their settlements east of the Jordan (32:22). If they failed to keep their promise, it would be a serious sin against God (32:23).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֨ה הָאָ֜רֶץ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙

and,subdued the=earth/land to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH

Here, land refers to the people who live there. Alternate translation: “and the people of the land are subdued before the face of Yahweh”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֨ה הָאָ֜רֶץ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙

and,subdued the=earth/land to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “and the Israelites have subdued the people who live in the land before Yahweh”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) you may return

(Some words not found in UHB: and,subdued the=earth/land to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH and=after return and=you_all_will_be free_of_obligation to,LORD and,to,Israel and,be the=earth/land the,this to/for=you_all as,possession to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH )

It is implied that they will return to the east side of the Jordan. Alternate translation: “you may return to this land on the east side of the Jordan”

(Occurrence 0) You will be guiltless toward Yahweh and toward Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and,subdued the=earth/land to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH and=after return and=you_all_will_be free_of_obligation to,LORD and,to,Israel and,be the=earth/land the,this to/for=you_all as,possession to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH )

This could mean: (1) “You will have fulfilled your obligation to Yahweh and to Israel” or (2) “There will be nothing for which Yahweh or the people of Israel can blame you.”
