The blessed and the unblessed

Luke 6:20–26

Mat 5:1–12

6:20 The blessed and the unblessed

(Mat. 5:1-12)

20Then looking up at his followers, he said,

Blessed are the poor, because God’s kingdom is yours.

21Blessed are those who don’t have enough to eat now, because you’ll all be satisfied.

Blessed are those who are weeping now, because you’ll all be laughing.

22[ref]You’re all blessed when people hate you and snob you, and when they deride you and slander your reputations as evil, all on account of humanity’s child. 23[ref]Be happy at that time and dance with happiness, because you’ll have a large reward in heaven. Their ancestors did the same sorts of things to the prophets.

24However it’s tragic for all you rich people, because you’ve already enjoyed all those comforts.

25It’s tragic for all of you who are full now, because you’ll all be hungry.

It’s tragic for all of you who are laughing now, because you’ll all be mourning and crying.

26It’s tragic for you whenever all the people say they admire you, because their ancestors did the same to the false prophets.

5:1 Yeshua’s sermon on the hillside

(Luke 6:20-23)

5After seeing all the crowds, Yeshua climbed up a hill, and when he sat down, his apprentices approached him 2and he taught them:

3Those who are poor in the spirit are blessed, because the kingdom of the heavens is theirs.

4[ref]Those who are mourning are blessed, because they will be comforted.

5[ref]Those who are gentle are blessed, because they will inherit the earth.

6[ref]Those who are hungry and thirsty to obey God are blessed, because they will be satisfied.

7Those who are merciful are blessed, because they will receive mercy.

8[ref]Those who have pure hearts are blessed, because they will see God.

9Those who are peacemakers are blessed, because they will be called children of God.

10[ref]Those who are persecuted for being godly are blessed, because the kingdom of heavens belongs to them.

11[ref]Everyone who is derided or chased or lied about is blessed, along with those who have evil things said about them just because they follow me. 12[ref]Be happy and praising God because you’ll all have a wonderful reward in the heavens, because in the past they also persecuted the prophets like that.
