Section 6:17–49: Jesus taught people how to be his disciples

In this section, Jesus spoke about how his true disciples should think and act. He spoke about this immediately after he had chosen twelve of his disciples to be his apostles. Jesus said many things about this topic in his speech, so that people have often called this particular speech of Jesus a “sermon.”

In this sermon, Jesus asked those who heard him to be different from other people in the world and to think differently. He encouraged his disciples to obey his authority and live as people of God. They should be generous and merciful even to their enemies, as God is generous to everyone. Jesus assured his disciples that they would be blessed and rewarded for their obedience and for suffering for him. He concluded his speech by telling parables to motivate his disciples to obey his teaching.

Some English versions divide 6:17–49 into several sections. Here is one way that might be done:

6:17–26 Blessings and woes

6:27–36 Love your enemies

6:37–42 Do not judge

6:43–45 A tree and its fruit

6:46–49 Two foundations

The sermon in 6:17–49 is similar to the sermon commonly referred to as “The Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew chapters 5–7.

Paragraph 6:20–23

Some people call verses 6:20–23 “The Beatitudes.” “Beatitudes” means “Blessings.” Some Beatitudes are also in Matthew 5:3–12.

Jesus spoke in general terms about God’s kingdom and God’s values. When he addressed the people as “you(plur),” he was making general statements. He did not mean that everyone in the crowd was poor, hungry, or weeping. Nor did he mean that every person who is poor will enjoy the blessings of God’s kingdom.

Use the form that is natural in your language for general statements that are true. Your language may prefer to use a different pronoun. For example:

They/People are blessed

He is blessed

In the fourth statement that begins with “Blessed are you,” Jesus describes the opposition that those who are a part of God’s kingdom will experience. They will experience these things because they are Jesus’ disciples.

6:22a

Blessed are you when people hate you,

Blessed are you: Translate this phrase the same way you did in 6:20b.

when people hate you: The phrase when people hate you means “when people hate you as Jesus’ disciples.” Jesus was not implying that being hated (or excluded or insulted) is a blessing in itself. Being hated was a sign that they were faithful followers of God. They were supposed to recognize that they were blessed because of that. Some other ways to translate this are:

when others hate you (CEV)

when you are hated

and when they exclude you and insult you

and when they exclude you: The word exclude means “refuse to accept someone as part of a social or religious group.” Some other ways to translate this are:

won’t have anything to do with you (CEV)

avoid you (GW)

when they separate you from their group

and insult you: The Greek word that the BSB translates as insult also means “to reproach.” This word implies that the person being insulted is wrong and should be blamed.

6:22c

and reject your name as evil

and reject your name as evil: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as reject your name as evil is literally “cast out your(plur) name as evil.”The views in the commentaries about what exactly this phrase means are quite varied. Some favor that “your name” refers to the collective name of “Christians” or “Nazarenes.” Others that it refers to the personal names of the believers. Some see this as referring to excommunication from the synagogue. Others see it as more general. The UBS Translator’s Handbook suggests it may mean that people avoid speaking “your name” because it is evil. We have opted to follow the majority of versions and give it a more general meaning. This also lines up with the parallel in Matthew (“speak all kinds of evil against you”) and the opposite statement found in the corresponding woe (“woe to you when all men speak well of you”). It means “to speak against someone in a way that harms him or his reputation.”

Some other ways to translate this are:

slander your very name (REB)

defame you (NRSV)

say cruel things about you (CEV)

spoil your name/reputation

your name: For the Jews, a person’s name symbolized that person himself and his reputation. So the phrase your name is a figure of speech. It is another way to refer to a person himself. Another way to translate it here is:

you

because of the Son of Man.

because of the Son of Man: The phrase because of the Son of Man means “because you are disciples of the Son of Man.” Many people would act badly toward Jesus’ disciples because those disciples followed Jesus, the Son of Man. Some other ways to translate this are:

because you follow the Son of Man (NCV)

because you are committed to the Son of Man (GW)

because you are loyal to the Son of Man (JBP)

the Son of Man: Jesus used the title the Son of Man to refer to himself. In some languages, it may be necessary to make it clear that Jesus was talking about himself. For example:

me, the Son of Man (NLT96)

The phrase the Son of Man also occurs in Luke at 6:5.

General Comment on 6:22a–d

The phrase, “because of the Son of Man,” goes with all of the four verbs in 6:22a–c. Jesus was saying that his disciples are blessed when:

  1. people hate them because of the Son of Man,

  2. people exclude them because of the Son of Man,

  3. people insult them because of the Son of Man, and

  4. people reject them as evil because of the Son of Man.

To make this clear, you could move the phrase “because of the Son of Man” to the beginning of the list of the four verbs. For example:

You have chosen to follow me, the Son of Man. Because of that, you are blessed when people hate you, when they exclude you…

Or you could leave it at its present position and add a phrase to include all four verbs. For example:

Blessed are you when men hate you…and reject your name as evil—all of this because you follow me, the Son of Man.
