TSNTyndale Study Notes:

55:1 thirsty . . . wine or milk: The invitation to eat and drink is similar to Wisdom’s call in Prov 9:5. The image promises the slaking of thirst not only by water but also by more costly items such as wine and milk. John applied a similar theme to Jesus Christ (John 4:14; 6:27, 35; 7:37; Rev 21:6; 22:17).
• it’s all free: Reconciliation with God is for anyone and has no cost.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

General Information:

Yahweh speaks of blessing the people freely as if he were selling food and drink to needy people for free.

Connecting Statement:

Connecting Statement:

Yahweh continues speaking to the people of Jerusalem in exile through Isaiah.

(Occurrence 0) Come … Come

(Some words not found in UHB: ho all/each/any/every thirsty come to_the,waters and=which not to=him/it money come buy and,eat and, come buy in/on/at/with,no money and,in/on/at/with,no cost wine and, milk )

The repetition of this word four times adds a sense of urgency to the invitation.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / irony

(Occurrence 0) buy wine and milk without money and without cost

(Some words not found in UHB: ho all/each/any/every thirsty come to_the,waters and=which not to=him/it money come buy and,eat and, come buy in/on/at/with,no money and,in/on/at/with,no cost wine and, milk )

There is a sense of irony in this statement since a person usually has to use money to buy something. This emphasizes Yahweh’s amazing grace in giving these things freely.
