8 And [immediately][fn] Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they were reasoning in this way within themselves, says [to them],[fn] “Why do you reason [these things][fn] in your hearts? 9 [[For]][fn] Which is easier, to say [to the paralytic],[fn] ‘Your sins {are}[fn] forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, [[and][fn] take up your mat][fn] and {walk}’?[fn]

10 “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority {to forgive sins [on earth][fn]}”[fn] - he says to the paralytic, 11 “{I say to you, rise},[fn] [[and]][fn] take up your mat and go to your house.”

12 {And he rose and}[fn] immediately took up the mat and went out before them all, so that they were [all][fn] amazed and glorified God, [saying,][fn] “We have never seen anything like this!”

13 And he went out [again][fn] {by}[fn] the sea; and all the crowd came to him, and he taught them.

14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And rising up, he followed him.

15 And it happened that {he reclined}[fn] in his house, [and][fn] many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many and they followed him.

16 And the scribes {of}[fn] the Pharisees, [seeing that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors,][fn] said to his disciples,“[[Why is it]][fn] That {he}[fn] eats [[and drinks]][fn] with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 And when Jesus heard it, he said [to them],[fn] [that][fn] “Those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners [[to repentance]].”[fn]

18 And the disciples of John and [[the disciples]][fn] of the Pharisees were fasting. And they came and said to him, “Why do the disciples of John [and {the disciples}[fn] of the Pharisees][fn] fast [, but your disciples do not fast]?”[fn]

19 And {Jesus}[fn] said to them, “Can the sons of the bridechamber[fn] fast while the bridegroom is with them? [As long as {they have the bridegroom}[fn] with them, they cannot fast.][fn] 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in {that day}.[fn]

21 “[[But]][fn] No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; if he does, the [new][fn] patch tears away from [[it, the new from]][fn] the old, and a worse tear is made.

22 “And no one pours new wine into old wineskins [[, but into new ones]].[fn] If he does, the wine will burst the wineskins, and {the wine is ruined as well as the wineskins}.[fn] [But new wine {is for}[fn] new wineskins.]”[fn]

23 And it happened [[again]][fn] that on the Sabbath he was passing through the grainfields, and {his}[fn] disciples began to [make their way][fn] plucking the heads of grain. 24 {And}[fn] the Pharisees said [to him],[fn] “Look, what {they}[fn] are doing on the Sabbath which is not lawful?”

25 And [[in response]][fn] he says to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and was hungry, he and those [[who were]][fn] with him; 26 [how][fn] he entered the house of God [in the time of Abiathar the high priest].[fn] [And][fn] He ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave it to those [[who were]][fn] with him?”

27 {And he said to them,}[fn] [“The Sabbath was made for men][fn] [, [and][fn] not men for the Sabbath;][fn] 28 [so][fn] the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
