Mark 15

15 And [immediately],[fn] [in the][fn] morning, [the chief priests],[fn] with the elders and scribes and the whole council, having made a plan, bound Jesus, led him away [[in the courtyard]],[fn] and handed [[him]][fn] over to Pilate.

2 And Pilate questioned him [[saying]],[fn] “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.” 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. [[But he answered nothing.]][fn]

4 But Pilate again questioned him, [saying,][fn] “Do you not answer [anything]?[fn] See how many things they accuse you of.”

5 But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate marveled.

6 Now at the feast {he}[fn] was accustomed to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. 7 But [[then]][fn] among the rebels in prison, who had committed [[a certain]][fn] murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. 8 And having gone up, the [[whole]][fn] crowd began to ask him as he used to do for them.

9 But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release [for you][fn] the King of the Jews?” 10 For he knew that it was out of envy that {the chief priests}[fn] had handed him over. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.

12 Pilate spoke to them [again],[fn] “What then {do you want me to do}[fn] [to the one you call][fn] the King of the Jews?” 13 They cried out again, [[saying,]][fn] “Crucify him!”

14 Pilate said [to them],[fn] “Why, what evil has he done?” But they cried out [all the more],[fn] [[saying,]][fn] “Crucify him!”

15 So Pilate, [wanting to satisfy the crowd,][fn] released Barabbas for them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.

16 And the soldiers led him away inside the courtyard, which is the Praetorium, and they called together the whole cohort. 17 And they dress him in a purple robe, and put on him a [woven][fn] crown of thorns; 18 and they began to greet him [[and say]],[fn] “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they struck his head with a reed and spat on him [and, kneeling down, they paid homage to him].[fn] 20 And when [they had mocked him,][fn] they stripped him of the purple and dressed him in his own clothes. And they led him out to crucify him.

21 And they force a certain passerby, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they bring him to the place called Golgotha, which is translated Place of the Skull. 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it [[to drink]].[fn]

24 And they crucify him and divide his garments, casting lots [for them to determine who should take what].[fn] 25 Now it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him was written, “[[This is]][fn] The King of the Jews.”

27 And with him they crucify two robbers, one on the right and one on his left. 28 [[And the scripture was fulfilled, which says, And he was numbered with the transgressors.]][fn]

29 And those passing by were blaspheming[fn] him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save yourself by coming down from the cross.”

31 [Likewise,][fn] the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe [[in him]].”[fn]

And those who were crucified [with him][fn] also reproached him.

33 {And}[fn] when the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour, {Jesus}[fn] cried out with a loud voice, [[saying,]][fn] “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is translated, “[My][fn] God, [my God],[fn] why have you forsaken me?”

35 And some of those standing nearby, [hearing this,][fn] said, “[Behold,][fn] He is calling for Elijah.” 36 [And][fn] Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, [and gave him a drink, saying,][fn] “Let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.” 37 But Jesus, having let out a loud voice, breathed his last.

38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw that he [[cried out and]][fn] breathed his last [in this way],[fn] he said, “Truly, this man was a Son of God.”

40 There were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, [and][fn] Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him [and served him],[fn] and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.

42 And when it was already evening since it was the day of preparation, which is the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting for the kingdom of God, came and dared to go in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44 Pilate marveled that he was already dead, and summoning the centurion, he asked him if he had been dead for some time. 45 And when he learned [from the centurion],[fn] he granted {the}[fn] {corpse}[fn] to Joseph.

46 And having bought a linen cloth, he took him [down],[fn] wrapped him in the linen cloth, and placed him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and he rolled a [[large]][fn] stone against the door of the tomb [, he went away].[fn]

47 [Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.][fn]
