Mark 7

7 And the Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered to him, having come from Jerusalem.

2 And when they saw [that][fn] some of his disciples were eating bread with defiled hands, that is, unwashed, [[they complained]][fn] 3 (for the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat [[bread]][fn] unless they wash their hands with a fist, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash themselves; and there are many other things that they have received to hold, washings of cups and pots and bronze vessels [and beds])[fn] –

5 [And][fn] The Pharisees and the scribes asked him [[saying]],[fn] “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with defiled [[and unwashed]][fn] hands?”

6 And he [[answering,]][fn] said to them [[that]],[fn] “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written [that][fn] ‘This people {honors}[fn] me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me; 7 But they worship me in vain, teaching doctrines, [[and]][fn] commandments of men.’[fn]

8 “[[For]][fn] Abandoning the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men [[washing of vessels and cups, and many other such things you do]].”[fn]

9 And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to {establish}[fn] your tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever {speaks evil}[fn] of father or mother must surely die.’[fn] 11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Corban, which means, ‘Gift,’ whatever you might benefit from me,” 12 [[and]][fn] you no longer allow him to do anything to {the father or the mother},[fn]’ 13 nullifying the word [[the commandment]][fn] of God by your [[foolish]][fn] tradition which you have handed down. [And you do many similar things.]”[fn]

14 And calling [again][fn] the crowd to him, he said to them, “Listen [to me, all of you,][fn] and understand. 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out [of a man][fn] [[those]][fn] are what defile him. 16 [[If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear]]”[fn]

17 And when he had entered the house and left the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he says to them, “Are you also without understanding in this way? Do you not understand[fn] that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him. 19 For it does not go into the heart but into the stomach, and expelled into the latrine.”

Thus cleansing all the foods.[fn]

20 And he said, “What comes out of a person, that is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, come evil thoughts, fornications,[fn] thefts, murders, 22 adulteries, greed, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness,[fn] an evil eye,[fn] blasphemies,[fn] pride, foolishness. 23 All [these][fn] evil things come from within and defile a person.”

24 From there, having arisen, he went away to the region of Tyre [[and Sidon]].[fn] And entering into a house, he wanted no one to know, but he could not escape notice; 25 {but}[fn] [immediately][fn] a woman heard about him, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, {came and fell}[fn] [at his feet];[fn] 26 now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth; and she asked him to cast out the demon from her daughter.

27 And {he}[fn] said to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered {and said}[fn] [to him],[fn] “[[Yes]][fn] Lord, [[for]][fn] even the dogs under the table eat from the children's crumbs.”

29 And he said to her, “Because of this word, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And going away to {her}[fn] house, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone out.

31 And again, going out from the region of Tyre, he came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the midst of the region of Decapolis.

32 [And][fn] They brought to him a deaf and mute man, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and having spit, he touched his tongue, 34 and looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Be opened.”

35 And [immediately][fn] his ears were opened, and [[immediately]][fn] the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke correctly. 36 And he ordered them {not to tell anyone};[fn] but {the more he ordered them, the more [[exceedingly]][fn] they [themselves][fn] proclaimed it}.[fn] 37 And they were exceedingly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; he even makes {the deaf hear and [the][fn] mute speak}.”[fn]
