Mark 4

4 And again he began to teach by the sea; and a very large crowd gathered around him, so that he got into a boat and sat in the sea, and all the crowd was by the sea [on the land].[fn]

2 And he taught them [many things][fn] in parables and said [to them in his teaching],[fn] 3 “Listen. Behold, the sower went out to sow. 4 {It happened during}[fn] the sowing, some seed fell by the road, and the birds [[of the air]][fn] came and ate it. 5 {And}[fn] other seed fell on rocky ground where it did not have much soil; [and][fn] it sprang up immediately [because it had no depth of soil];[fn] 6 {and}[fn] when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away. 7 And other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it did not produce fruit. 8 And other seed fell into good soil and produced fruit, growing and increasing, and it bore thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear. [[And let the one who understands, understand.]]”[fn]

10 {And}[fn] when he was alone, {those around him with the twelve}[fn] asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, “To you has been given [[to know]][fn] the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those outside, everything is in parables, 12 so that [seeing][fn] they may see and not perceive, and hearing they [may hear and][fn] not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven [[their sins]].”[fn][fn]

13 And he says to them, “Do you not understand this parable? And how will you understand all the parables? 14 The one who sows the word sows. 15 These are the ones by the road; where the word is sown and when they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word that was {sown in them}.[fn] 16 And these are [[likewise]][fn] the ones sown on the rocky ground, [who,][fn] when they hear the word, [immediately][fn] receive it with joy, 17 and they have no root in themselves but are temporary; then when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately fall away.[fn] 18 {And there are others who}[fn] are sown among the thorns; [these are the ones][fn] who hear the word, 19 and the worries of {the}[fn] {age}[fn] and the deceitfulness of {wealth}[fn] and the desires for other things entering in, choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 And {those}[fn] are the ones sown on the good ground, who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”

21 And he said to them [that],[fn] “Is the lamp brought in to be put under a basket [or][fn] under a bed? Is it not to be [put][fn] on a lampstand? 22 For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you [[who hear]],[fn] and more will be added to you. 25 For whoever has, to him more will be {given};[fn] and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”

26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is like [[this;]][fn] a man who casts seed upon the earth. 27 And he sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, as he does not know. 28 [[For]][fn] The earth bears fruit automatically, first grass, then the stalk, then full grain in the stalk. 29 {But}[fn] when the fruit is ripe, [immediately][fn] he sends forth the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

30 And he said, “How shall we compare the kingdom of God, or in what parable shall we put it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the earth, is smaller than all the seeds [on the earth],[fn] 32 [And when it is sown,][fn] [It grows up][fn] And it becomes larger than all the garden plants and produces large branches, so that the birds of the sky can nest under its shade.”

33 And with [many][fn] such parables, he was speaking [the word][fn] [to them],[fn] as they were able to understand; 34 but without a parable, he did not speak to them, and privately he explained everything to {his own}[fn] disciples.

35 And he says to them on that day, when evening had come, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, [[and]][fn] they took him along as he was in the boat, and there were [many][fn] other boats with him.

37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat [, so that {the boat}[fn] was [already][fn] filling].[fn] 38 And he was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. And they woke him and said [to him],[fn] “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

39 And having been awakened, he rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “[Be silent,][fn] Be still.” And the wind ceased, and there was a [great][fn] calm.

40 And he said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that [even][fn] the wind and the sea obey [him]?”[fn]
