8 [[But]][fn] In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, {he}[fn] called {the}[fn] disciples and said [to them],[fn] 2 “I have compassion for the crowd because they have been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry [to their homes],[fn] they will faint on the way; {and}[fn] some of them have come from a distance.”
4 {His}[fn] disciples say to him [that],[fn] “From where will anyone be able to satisfy these people with bread in a desolate place?”
5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” 6 And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. 7 They also had a few small fish; and after blessing [them],[fn] [he said][fn] {to set these also before them}.[fn] 8 So they [[all]][fn] ate and were satisfied; and they took up the leftover [broken pieces],[fn] seven baskets [[full]].[fn] 9 And they [[who ate]][fn] were [about][fn] four thousand men. And he sent them away.
10 [Immediately][fn] he got into the boat with his disciples and [[Jesus]][fn] came to the region of Dalmanutha.
11 And the Pharisees went out and began to debate [[with]][fn] him, seeking from him a sign [[to see]][fn] from heaven, {testing him}.[fn]
12 And sighing deeply in {his}[fn] spirit, [he says,][fn] “Why does this generation seek a sign? [Truly][fn] [I say][fn] to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
13 And leaving them, he again got into the boat [[once more]][fn] and went [to the other side].[fn] 14 And {they}[fn] forgot to take bread, {[fn]and except for one loaf, they did not have any} [with them][fn] in the boat.
15 And he was warning them, saying, “[Watch,][fn] Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” 16 And they reasoned with one another [[saying]][fn] that they did not have bread. 17 And knowing this, {he}[fn] says to them, “Why do you reason [[in your hearts, you of little faith,]][fn] that you have no bread? Do you not yet understand nor comprehend? {Is your heart hardened?}[fn] 18 {Having eyes, do you not see},[fn] and having ears, do you not hear? [And][fn] Do you not [understand nor][fn] remember? 19 [[And]][fn] When I broke the [five][fn] loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” They said to him, “Twelve.”
20 “When I broke [the seven][fn] [for the four thousand],[fn] [how many baskets [full][fn] [of broken pieces][fn] did you pick up?” And they said [to him],[fn] “Seven.”][fn] 21 And he said to them, “ [[How]][fn] Do you not yet understand?”
22 And they come to Bethsaida. And they bring to him a blind man and they ask him to touch him. 23 And taking {the blind man by the hand},[fn] he led him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And looking up, he said, “{I see people, for I see them like trees walking around}.”[fn] 25 {Then he laid his hands on his eyes again, and he saw clearly, and his sight was restored, and he saw}[fn] everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his house, {saying, “Do not even enter the village}[fn] [[nor tell it to any in the village]].”[fn]
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into [the villages of][fn] Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked {his}[fn] disciples, saying [to them],[fn] “Who do men say that I am?” 28 And they {said to}[fn] him, saying [that][fn] “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, [that][fn] one of the prophets.” 29 And he {asked}[fn] them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to him, “You are the Christ[fn] [[, the son of the living God]].”[fn] 30 And he rebuked them not to tell anyone about him.
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by [the elders and][fn] the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spoke the word openly.
And Peter took [him][fn] aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But [[Jesus]][fn] turning around and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter {and said},[fn] “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
34 And calling the crowd together with {his}[fn] disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow me, let him deny [himself and][fn] take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life [for my sake and][fn] for the gospel [[the same]][fn] will save it. 36 “For what does it profit a man {to gain}[fn] the whole world and forfeit his life? 37 For what can a man give in exchange for his life? 38 “For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in {this}[fn] adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
