Mark 6

6 And he went out [from there and came][fn] to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

2 And [on the Sabbath [day],[fn]][fn] he began to teach in the synagogue, and [many who heard,][fn] they were astonished [[at his teaching]][fn], saying, “From where does this one get [[all]][fn] these things, and what is the wisdom given to him, that such miracles being done through his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and {Joses}[fn] and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters [here][fn] with us?” And they took offense at him.

4 [And][fn] Jesus said [to them],[fn] “A prophet is not without honor except in his [[own]][fn] hometown [and among his relatives][fn] and in his household.”

5 And he could not do any miracles [there],[fn] except that he laid his hands on a few sick people [, he healed them].[fn] 6 [And he marveled][fn] because of their unbelief.

And {he},[fn] went around the villages in a circuit teaching.

7 And he calls the twelve [[disciples]][fn] [and began][fn] to send them out [[again]][fn] [two][fn] by two {and gave}[fn] them authority over the unclean spirits, 8 and he commanded [them][fn] [that][fn] they should take nothing [for the journey][fn] except a staff only, no bread, no bag, no copper in their {belts}, 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.

10 And he said [to them],[fn] “Whenever you enter [into a house],[fn] stay there until you leave that place. 11 And {whoever}[fn] [place][fn] does not receive you, nor listen to you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust {that is under your}[fn] feet as a testimony against them.” [[“Truly I say to you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city”]][fn]

12 And going out, they preached [[to them][fn]] that people should repent, 13 and they cast out many demons and they were anointing with oil many who were sick and they were healing [[them]].[fn]

14 And King Herod heard, for his name had become known, and {they}[fn] said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 [But][fn] others were saying, “He is Elijah.” And others [were saying],[fn] “He is {a prophet}[fn] [like][fn] {one of the prophets}.”[fn] 16 But when Herod heard, he said [[that]],[fn] “ John, whom I beheaded, this one has been raised [[from the dead]].”[fn]

17 For Herod himself had sent and arrested John and bound him [[and put him]][fn] in prison on account of Herodias, [the wife][fn] of his brother Philip, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod [that],[fn] “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and {wanted}[fn] to kill him. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, [and][fn] he kept him safe. When he heard him, {he was greatly perplexed},[fn] and yet he heard him gladly.

21 {And}[fn] [when][fn] the day became opportune, Herod made a feast for his birthday for {his}[fn] high officials, and the commanders, and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when {Herodias's}[fn] daughter came in and danced, {she}[fn] pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 {And he swore to her [many things],[fn] “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom}.”[fn]

24 And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “[[Ask for]][fn] The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And entering [immediately with haste][fn] [to the king, she {asked saying}[fn]],[fn] “[I want that you][fn] Give me at once on a platter [[here]][fn] the head of John the Baptist.”

26 [And][fn] The king, becoming deeply grieved [[when he heard]],[fn] but because of the oaths and [because of][fn] those reclining at the table, did not wish to reject her. 27 {And}[fn] [immediately][fn] [the king],[fn] having sent a soldier, he commanded to bring his head [[on a platter]][fn]. [{And}[fn] going away, he beheaded him in the prison. 28 And he brought {his}[fn] head on a platter.][fn] And he gave it to [her][fn] the girl, and the girl {gave it}[fn] to {her}[fn] mother.

29 {And when his disciples heard of it},[fn] they came and took his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

30 And the apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. 31 And {he}[fn] {says}[fn] to them, “Come {by yourselves, privately}[fn] to a deserted place and rest a little.” For there were many coming and going [, and they did not even have the opportunity to eat].[fn]

32 And they went [away in the boat][fn] to a deserted place by themselves.

33 And they saw {them}[fn] going away, and many recognized [[them]],[fn] and on foot from all the cities they ran together there [and went ahead of them][fn] [[and gathered to him]].[fn] 34 And when {he}[fn] went ashore, {he}[fn] saw a great crowd, [and][fn] {he}[fn] had compassion on them because they were [like sheep][fn] without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.

35 And when it was already late, his disciples approached him and said, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already {late};[fn] 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding fields and [[into the]][fn] villages and buy themselves {something to eat}.”[fn] 37 {But}[fn] {he}[fn] answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of loaves and give it to them to eat? [[So that each may take a little.]][fn]”

38 {But}[fn] {He}[fn] says to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they {learned},[fn] they said [[to him]],[fn] “Five [[loaves]],[fn] and two fish.”

39 And {he}[fn] commanded them [all][fn] to recline [in groups][fn] on the green grass. 40 And they reclined in groups [, in hundreds and in fifties].[fn]

41 And taking the [five][fn] loaves and the [two][fn] fish, looking up to heaven, blessed and broke the [[five]][fn] loaves, and gave them to {his}[fn] disciples to set before [them], and he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied, 43 and they took up twelve baskets [full][fn] of [[excess]][fn] broken pieces and of the [[two]][fn] fish. 44 And there were [[about]][fn] five thousand men who ate [the loaves].[fn]

45 And immediately [[having risen,]][fn] he compelled his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead [to the other side,][fn] to Bethsaida, while he [[himself]][fn] dismissed the crowd. 46 And after saying farewell to them, he went away to the mountain to pray.

47 And when evening came, the boat was [[formerly]][fn] in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And seeing them battered at the oars, for the wind was [[exceedingly]][fn] against [them],[fn] about the fourth watch [of the night][fn] {he}[fn] came [to them],[fn] walking on the sea, and he wanted to pass by [them].[fn]

49 But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost, and they cried out; 50 [for they all saw him][fn] and were troubled. {But}[fn] [immediately][fn] he spoke with them and said [to them],[fn] “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 51 And he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind ceased, and they were [exceedingly][fn] [beyond measure][fn] astounded [[and wondered]],[fn] 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

53 And crossing over to the land [[from there]],[fn] they came to Gennesaret [and anchored].[fn] 54 And when they got out of the boat, immediately recognizing him, [[the men of that place,]][fn] 55 they ran around [[into]][fn] the whole [[surrounding]][fn] region [and][fn] they began {to carry around [all][fn] on mats those who were sick, wherever}[fn] they heard {he}[fn] was.

56 And wherever he went, into villages [or cities][fn] or fields, they laid the sick [in the marketplaces][fn] and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched him were made well.
