Mark 9

9 And he said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here [[with me]][fn] who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God having come with power.”

2 And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and leads them up a high mountain alone by themselves. And {he}[fn] was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white [[as snow,]][fn] [as no launderer on earth can whiten them].[fn]

4 And [[behold]][fn] Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; [[if you want]][fn] let us make [[here]][fn] three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

7 And [[behold,]][fn] a cloud overshadowed them, and [it happened,][fn] a voice came from the cloud [[saying]],[fn] “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with themselves.

9 And as they were coming down from the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 [And they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what it meant to rise from the dead.][fn]

11 And they asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12 [And][fn] He said to them, “Elijah indeed comes first and restores all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I say to you [that][fn] Elijah has [[already]][fn] come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.”

14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a [large][fn] crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when the whole crowd saw him, they were amazed and ran up to greet him. 16 And he asked {them},[fn] “What are you arguing about with them?”

17 And someone from the crowd answered [him][fn] [[and said]],[fn] “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a mute spirit. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. And I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able [[to cast it out]].”[fn] 19 And {he}[fn] answered them, “O faithless [[and corrupt]][fn] generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him to me.”

20 And they brought the boy [to him].[fn] And when the spirit saw him, [immediately][fn] it convulsed the boy, and {he}[fn] fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

21 And Jesus asked his father [[saying]],[fn] “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 [And][fn] It has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, [[Lord]][fn] have compassion on us and help us.”

23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can [[believe]]’![fn] All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 [[And]][fn] [Immediately][fn] The father of the child cried out [[with tears]][fn] and said, “I believe [[Lord]];[fn] help my unbelief!”

25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the [unclean][fn] spirit, saying [to it],[fn] “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out [[of him]],[fn] and the boy was like a corpse, so that {most}[fn] of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him [by the hand][fn] and lifted him up, and he arose.

28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples {asked him privately},[fn] “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And {he}[fn] said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer [[and fasting]].”[fn]

30 And from there they went out and {passed}[fn] through Galilee, and he did not want anyone to know; 31 for he was teaching his disciples and saying [to them],[fn] “The Son of Man is to be handed over to the hands of men, and they will kill him, and [after being killed,][fn] he will rise {after three days}.”[fn] 32 But they did not understand the word, and they were afraid to ask him.

33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you discussing [[among yourselves]][fn] on the way?” 34 But they were silent; for [on the way][fn] they had discussed with one another who [[among them]][fn] was the greatest.

35 [And][fn] Sitting down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.”

36 And taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and taking it in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one of such children [in my name],[fn] receives me; and whoever receives me, does not receive me but the one who sent me.”

38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone [[who does not follow us]][fn] casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.”

39 But {Jesus}[fn] {said},[fn] “Do not stop [him];[fn] for no one who performs a miracle in my name will be able [soon][fn] afterward to speak evil of me; 40 {for whoever is not against us is for us}.[fn]

41 “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name because you belong to Christ, truly I say to you, [that][fn] he will not lose his reward.

42 “And whoever causes one of {these}[fn] little ones who believe [in me][fn] to stumble, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

43 “And if your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled than having two hands to go [into Gehenna],[fn][fn] into the unquenchable fire 44 [[where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched]].[fn]

45 “And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; [[for]][fn] it is better for you to enter life lame than having two feet to be thrown into {Gehenna}[fn] 46 [[Their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched]].[fn]

47 “And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna [[of fire]],[fn] 48 where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.

49 “{For everyone will be salted with fire}[fn] [[and every sacrifice will be salted with salt]].[fn]

50 “Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you season it? [[You therefore]][fn] Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
