Mark 14

14 Now the Passover [and the Unleavened Bread were][fn] after two days. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how, [by deceit],[fn] they might arrest him and kill him; 2 [for][fn] they said, “[Not][fn] During the feast, lest there {will be}[fn] an uproar among the people.”

3 And while {he}[fn] was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he reclined, a woman {came}[fn] with an alabaster jar of ointment [of pure nard, very costly],[fn] [[and]][fn] breaking the [alabaster][fn] jar, she poured it on his head. 4 But {there were some who were indignant among themselves},[fn] [[and saying]][fn] “{Why has this waste [of the ointment][fn] occurred}?[fn] 5 [For][fn] This [ointment][fn] could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.

6 But Jesus said [[to them]],[fn] “Leave her alone; why are you causing her trouble? [[For]][fn] She has done a good deed for me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can [[always]][fn] do good for them; but you will not always have me. 8 What she had, she did: she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.

9 “[[But]][fn] Truly [I say to you][fn] [[that]],[fn] wherever {the}[fn] gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

10 And [[behold]][fn] Judas Iscariot, [one][fn] [of the twelve],[fn] went to the chief priests in order to betray him [to them].[fn] 11 {But they},[fn] [having heard,][fn] they rejoiced and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might betray him at an opportune time.

12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they were sacrificing the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you so that you may eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent two of his disciples and said [to them][fn], “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him. 14 And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house [that],[fn] ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” ’ 15 And he will show you a large upper room [[of a house]][fn] furnished [and ready];[fn] there prepare for us.”

16 And {the}[fn] disciples went out [[to prepare]][fn] [and came][fn] into the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 {And}[fn] when evening came, he arrived with the twelve. 18 And while they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, one of you will betray me, the one eating with me.” 19 [[But]][fn] They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, “{Is it I?}”[fn] 20 But [[answering]][fn] he said to them, “It is one of the twelve, the one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.

21 “For the Son of Man [[is being handed over]][fn] goes just as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom [the Son of Man][fn] is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

22 And while they were eating, he[fn] took bread, and after blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them, and said [[to them]],[fn] “[Take,][fn] [[Eat]][fn] This is my body.”

23 And taking a cup, after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And he said [to them],[fn] “This is my blood [of the [[new]][fn] covenant],[fn] which is poured out for many [[for the forgiveness of sins]].[fn] 25 Truly I say to you, no longer, [certainly not][fn] will I drink of the {fruit}[fn] of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 {And}[fn] Jesus says to them [that],[fn] “You will all be made to stumble [[because of me this night]],[fn] for it is written [that],[fn] ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep [[of the flock]][fn] will be scattered.’ 28 {But}[fn] after I am raised [[from the dead]],[fn] I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

29 But Peter [[answering]][fn] said to him, “{Even if}[fn] all are made to stumble [[because of you]],[fn] but not I. [[I will not fall away.]]”[fn]

30 And Jesus says to him, “Truly I say to you [today,][fn] that on {this very}[fn] night, before the rooster crows [twice],[fn] you will deny me three times.” 31 But {he}[fn] spoke [[more]][fn] emphatically, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all were saying the same.

32 And they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took Peter, [and] James, [and] John with him, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 {And}[fn] he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to death; remain here and watch.”

35 And going a little farther, he fell on [[his face to]][fn] the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, {the}[fn] hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, [[my]][fn] [Father, all things are possible for you; remove {this}[fn] cup from me; yet][fn] not what I will, but what you [[will]].”[fn]

37 [And he came][fn] And he found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray [that][fn] you may {not}[fn] enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 And again he went away and prayed [, having said the same word].[fn]

40 And [[having returned]][fn] {again he came and found them sleeping},[fn] for their eyes were heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.

41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Sleep [on now][fn] and take your rest; it is enough; the {hour has come};[fn] behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us go [; behold, the one betraying me has drawn near].”[fn]

43 And [immediately],[fn] while he was still speaking, Judas [[Iscariot]],[fn] one of the twelve, came up, and with him a [[large]][fn] crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests [, the scribes, and the elders].[fn]

44 Now the one who was betraying him had given them a sign, saying [to them],[fn] “Whomever I kiss, that one is the one; seize him and lead him away securely.” 45 And [having come immediately,][fn] approaching him, he says, [[Greetings]][fn] “Rabbi, [[Rabbi,]][fn]” and kissed him. 46 Then they laid their hands {on}[fn] him and seized him.

47 But [a certain][fn] one [of those standing by],[fn] drawing his sword, struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.

48 And Jesus, [answering,][fn] said to them, “Have you come out [as][fn] against a robber, with swords and clubs to arrest me? 49 I was with you every day in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me; but this has happened so that the Scriptures [[of the prophets]][fn] might be fulfilled.” 50 And [[his disciples]][fn] leaving him, they all fled.

51 And a certain young man was following him, wrapped in a linen cloth [over his naked body],[fn] and [[the young men]][fn] they seized him; 52 but leaving the linen cloth, naked he fled [[from them]].[fn]

53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest [[Caiaphas]],[fn] and [all][fn] the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together [[with him]].[fn] 54 And Peter followed him at a distance, even {into}[fn] the courtyard of the high priest, and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself by the fire.

55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimonies were not equal.

57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 “{We heard him say},[fn] ‘I will destroy {this}[fn] temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.’ ” 59 Yet even in this way their testimony was not equal.

60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and questioned Jesus, [saying,][fn] “[Do you not answer anything?][fn] What is it that these men testify against you?” 61 But {he}[fn] was silent and did not answer anything.

[Again][fn] The high priest [questioned him and][fn] said to him, “Are you [the Christ,][fn] the Son of {the Blessed One}?”[fn] 62 And [[answering him,]][fn] Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power [[of God]][fn] [and coming][fn] {with}[fn] the {clouds}[fn] of heaven.”

63 Then [[immediately]][fn] the high priest tore his tunics and said, “What further need [do we have][fn] of witnesses? 64 [[Look]][fn] You [[all]][fn] have heard the blasphemy [[from his mouth]];[fn] what does it seem to you?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.

65 And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him and to say to him, “Prophesy! [[to us, Christ! who hit you?]]”[fn] And [the officers][fn] received him with blows.

66 And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out into the forecourt [and a rooster crowed].[fn]

69 And [again][fn] the servant girl, seeing him, {began again to say}[fn] to those who were standing there, “This man is one of them.” 70 [But he again denied it.][fn]

And after a little while, those who were standing there again said to {Peter},[fn] “Truly you are one of them [, for you are a Galilean][fn] [[, and your speech resembles]].”[fn] 71 But he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know this man [you are talking about].”[fn]

72 And [immediately][fn] a rooster crowed [a second time].[fn] And Peter remembered the word how Jesus had said to him [, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”][fn] And he broke down and wept.
