Mark 10

10 And from there, getting up, he comes to the region of Judea [and][fn] {beyond the Jordan},[fn] and crowds gather [again][fn] to him, and as he was accustomed, again he taught them.

2 And [Pharisees approached,][fn] asking him whether it is lawful for a man to divorce a wife, testing him. 3 But he, answering, said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “{Moses}[fn] allowed a certificate of divorce to be written and to divorce.”[fn]

5 But Jesus said [to them],[fn] “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote [you][fn] this commandment. 6 But from the beginning [of creation],[fn] {he}[fn] made them male and female. 7 [[And, he said]][fn] For this reason a man will leave {his}[fn] father and [[his]][fn] mother [and be joined to his wife],[fn] 8 and the two will become one flesh; so they are no longer two but one flesh.[fn] 9 [Therefore,][fn] What God has joined together, let no man separate.”

10 And in the house again, {the}[fn] disciples asked him about this. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery [against her];[fn] 12 and if {she},[fn] having divorced her husband, [marries another,][fn] she commits adultery.”

13 And they were bringing children to him so that he might touch them; but {the}[fn] disciples rebuked {them}.[fn] 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; [[and]][fn] do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15 “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom [of God][fn] like a child will not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms, blessed them, laying his hands on them.

17 As he was setting out on his journey, a [[certain rich]][fn] man ran up and knelt before him, and asked [him][fn] [[saying]],[fn] “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one, God [[alone]].[fn]

19 “You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, [Do not commit adultery,][fn] Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, [Do not defraud,][fn] Honor your father and [[your]][fn] mother.’ ” 20 And he [[answering]][fn] said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things since my youth. [[What am I still lacking?]]”[fn]

21 {Jesus},[fn] looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing; [[if you will be perfect]][fn] go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, [[take up the cross, and]][fn] follow me.” 22 But he was saddened by the word and went away sorrowful; for he had many possessions. 23 And looking around, Jesus says to his disciples, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 But {the}[fn] disciples were amazed at his words. {Jesus},[fn] answering [again],[fn] says to them, “Children, how difficult it is [[for those who trust in riches]][fn] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go {through}[fn] [the][fn] eye of [the][fn] needle than for a rich person to [enter][fn] the kingdom of God.”

26 And they were exceedingly astonished, saying to themselves, “And who can be saved?” 27 [[But]][fn] Looking at them, Jesus says, “With men it is impossible, {but not with God.}[fn] [For all things are possible with God.]”[fn]

28 [[And]][fn] Peter began to say to him, “[Behold,][fn] We have left everything and followed you. [[What, therefore, will be for us?]]”[fn]

29 Jesus {said}[fn] [[to him]][fn] [[saying]],[fn] “Truly I say to you, [[that]][fn] there is no one who has left [house or][fn] brothers or sisters or mother [or father][fn] [[or wife]][fn] or children or fields [for my sake and for [the sake of][fn] the gospel],[fn] 30 who will not receive a hundredfold [now][fn] in this time [[the one who has left]][fn] [houses [and brothers][fn] and sisters and mothers and children and fields, with persecutions][fn] [and][fn] in the age to come, [[will receive]][fn] eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and [the][fn] last first.”

32 They were on the way going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was leading them; and they were amazed [, and those who followed were afraid].[fn] And taking the twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him, 33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests [and the scribes],[fn] and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 and they will mock him and spit on him [and flog him and kill him],[fn] and {after three days}[fn] he will rise.”

35 And James and John, the [[two]][fn] sons of Zebedee, came to him, saying [to him],[fn] “Teacher, we want you to do [for us][fn] whatever we ask of you.”

36 [And he said to them, “{What do you want me to do for you?}”[fn]][fn] 37 And they said [to him],[fn] “Grant [to us][fn] to sit, one at your right hand [and one at your left],[fn] {in your glory}.”[fn]

38 But [[having answered,]][fn] Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, {or}[fn] to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said [to him],[fn] “We are able.”

[And Jesus said to them,][fn] “The cup that I drink you will [[indeed]][fn] drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared [[by my Father]].”[fn]

41 [And][fn] When the [[other]][fn] ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.

42 [And][fn] {Jesus}[fn] called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority [over them].[fn] 43 [But][fn] It is not so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, 44 And whoever wants to be first [among you][fn] will be the servant of all; 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

46 [And they come into Jericho.][fn] {And}[fn] As he was going out from Jericho, and his disciples and a considerable crowd, the son of Timaeus, [Bartimaeus,][fn] {a blind beggar, was sitting by the road}.[fn] 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!” 48 [And many were rebuking him, that he should be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”][fn]

49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, [saying to him],[fn] “Take courage, rise, he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to {Jesus}.[fn] 51 And Jesus answered him and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “[[Master,]][fn] Rabboni, that I may regain my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has saved you.” And immediately he regained his sight and followed {him}[fn] on the road.
