Mark 12

12 And he began to speak to them in parables, “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress and built a tower and leased it to vine-growers and went on a journey. 2 And he sent a servant to [[the vine-growers]][fn] at the time, {in order to receive}[fn] [[from the vine-growers]][fn] some of the fruits of the vineyard; 3 and taking him, they beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 And [again][fn] he sent another [servant][fn] to them; and they [[stoned that one,]][fn] struck him on the head and {dishonored him}.[fn] 5 And [[again]][fn] he sent another [[servant]];[fn] [and they killed him,][fn] [and many others, some they beat, and some][fn] they killed. 6 [[Yet]][fn] {Still}[fn] He had one, {a}[fn] beloved son; [[and]][fn] he sent [him][fn] last [to them],[fn] saying [that],[fn] ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But {those}[fn] vine-growers said to themselves [that],[fn] ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And taking him, they killed [him][fn] and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What [then][fn] will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine-growers and give the vineyard to others.

10 “Have you not read this Scripture, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the cornerstone; 11 this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”[fn]

12 And they sought to seize him, but they feared the crowd, for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. [And leaving him, they went away.][fn]

13 And they send [to him][fn] some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, in order to catch him in his words. 14 And {coming, they say to him},[fn] “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and do not care about anyone; for you do not look at the face of men, but teach the way of God in truth. [[So tell us,]][fn] Is it lawful [[for us]][fn] to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? [Should we pay, or should we not pay?]”[fn]

15 But knowing their hypocrisy, {he}[fn] said to them, “Why do you test me [[hypocrites]]?[fn] Bring me a denarius [[here]][fn] so that I may see it.” 16 And they brought it. And he says to them, “Whose image is this and the inscription?” And they said [to him],[fn] “Caesar's.” 17 {Jesus said}[fn] [to them],[fn] “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.

18 And Sadducees come to him, who say there is no resurrection, and they questioned him, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us [that][fn] if someone's brother dies and {leaves}[fn] a wife, and leaves no {child},[fn] the brother should take {the}[fn] wife and raise up offspring for his brother.[fn] 20 [[Now]][fn] There were [[with us]][fn] seven brothers; and the {first}[fn] took a wife, and dying left no offspring; 21 and the second took her, and died {leaving no offspring};[fn] [and][fn] {the third likewise};[fn] 22 [and][fn] the seven [[took her]][fn] [[also]][fn] left no offspring. [Last of all,][fn] [the woman also died.][fn] 23 “In the resurrection [when they rise][fn], whose [wife][fn] will she be? [For the seven had her as wife.]”[fn]

24 [[And answering,]][fn] Jesus said to them, “Is it not for this reason that you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God? [[You know.]][fn] 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels [[which are]][fn] in heaven. 26 But concerning the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, {how God said to him saying},[fn] I am [the][fn] God of Abraham, and [the][fn] God of Isaac, and [the][fn] God of Jacob? 27 He is not [the][fn] God of the dead, but [[God]][fn] of the living; [[therefore]][fn] you are greatly mistaken.”

28 And one of the scribes came up, having heard [them disputing, and seeing that he had answered them well],[fn] asked him, [[saying “Teacher.”]][fn] “Which is the first commandment [of all]?”[fn]

29 [[But]][fn] {Jesus}[fn] answered [[him]],[fn] “The first [[of all commandments]][fn] is this, ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, [the Lord][fn] is one; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, [and with all your mind,][fn] and with all your strength.’[fn] [[This is the first commandment.]][fn] 31 [[And]][fn] The second is {this},[fn] ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”[fn]

32 [And][fn] The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher, you have spoken the truth, for there is one [[God]],[fn] and there is no [other][fn] besides him;[fn] 33 and to love him with all {the}[fn] heart, and with all the understanding, [[with all the soul]][fn] and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”[fn] 34 And Jesus, seeing [him][fn] that he had answered wisely, said to him [that],[fn] “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared ask him [any longer].[fn]

35 And {Jesus}[fn] answering, was teaching in the temple, “How do the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 [[For]][fn] David himself {said}[fn] by the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies {under your feet}.” ’[fn] 37 [[Therefore]][fn] David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?” And the large crowd listened to him gladly.

38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes and {receive}[fn] greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and [have the best seats][fn] in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows' houses and [[orphans]][fn] for a show make long prayers; they will receive the greater condemnation.”

41 And sitting down opposite the treasury, {he}[fn] observed [[everyone]][fn] how the crowd was putting {copper coins into the treasury};[fn] [and many rich people were putting in large amounts].[fn] 42 And a [poor][fn] widow came and put in two small copper coins, which is a quadrans.[fn] 43 And calling {his}[fn] disciples to him, he said to them, “Truly I say to you [that],[fn] this poor widow has put in more than [all][fn] [of those who are putting in] to the treasury;[fn] 44 for {they all}[fn] put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her entire livelihood.”
